Hello all and welcome to my very first interview! I'm Goldfish and I'll be the interviewer.
Let's welcome Grace Shu (@GraceS10704),
Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background?
I'm a sophomore in high school right now, and I'm a writer, artist, and musician. Please don't think I'm boring-- I also love memes :D, so to you guys out there, send me some. Well, I really love to sing, even though I suck at it. Yay. As a replacement, I write my own song lyrics and poems, some of which I've inserted into the narrative of my current book.
I was born in Texas on Valentine's Day (I am therefore Cupid), but I moved here to SoCal when I was one, so I've essentially lived here my whole life.
Believe me, I went through some horribly cringe-y phases and I've done some pretty stupid things before. Ask any of my friends, they'll be glad to tell you. Honestly, you can probably just message me out of the blue and be like, "Hey, so why do you need glasses?" and I'll say, "Because I was sitting atop a plastic ball on a picnic table and hit my head three times on the way down." #Edgy.
Let me just say, I make friends in really strange ways. When I was younger, I would actually just start talking to random people I met in the library by my house. They actually became some of my best friends, so there's that. From what I've learned, math class is also a pretty nice place to meet people too.
I was also a Scholastic Regional Gold Key Recipient for my poetry.
I don't think you're boring at all! I'm the same way really.
Do you think someone could be a writer if they don't feel emotions strongly?
Ha! I'm going to answer you with a quote I wrote in my current novel "No Such Dalliance." Yes, I'm literally quoting myself.
"Words mean nothing until you apply passion to them; it is that passion that transforms imagination into reality, and dreams into the future. It can- it will- make waves beckon and mountains shudder at one's command, if only you deign to surrender to your dastardly emotions."
Bam.
What authors did you disliked but grew into?
I originally didn't like Dickens' writing style, because of his habit of repetition and omniscient narration, but I've come to appreciate his type of literary fiction that teaches the readers about the world and societies they live in, even with the huge spans of time and distance that separate them.
You know what's funny, though? It's actually because of him that I started writing my current novel "No Such Dalliance." I'll explain why in a second.
What are your ambitions for your writing career?
To be honest, I really hope to finish my current novel before I finish my junior year. It's definitely my goal to get it picked up by a publisher, but at the very least I'll end up self-publishing. The sad thing is, I know that writing as a profession usually doesn't provide enough to support oneself, so it might just stay as a side hobby of mine instead when I'm older.
