Why did he have to do this? I silently ask myself with a sigh, as I gently run the
cleansing cloth over my neck, successfully removing the caked on foundation and concealer."It looks even worse than before...," I mutter grudgingly. What had I even done to deserve this? You talked back. You had an attitude. So? Sin would have never chocked me. Not like he did. I can't even refer to him by his name anymore. The mere thought of him disgusts me and causes a shiver to run down the length of my spine.
I feel so disappointed in myself, knowing that I had thought him capable of being my one and only. My husband, the future father of my children, my best friend...my everything. I was so silly to even...
No. No, I'm not silly. It wasn't silly for me to form feelings for someone whom I thought was such a wonderful person with such a kind and caring soul. It wasn't silly for me to imagine my life with someone that had always been so kind and attentive in the past. It wasn't silly for me to believe him, when he had never given me a reason before not to.
But hadn't he shown me the signs?
Getting angry when I didn't pick up the phone after the second ring. Becoming irate when I didn't respond to a text within mere minutes. Putting his fist through a wall when we had even the smallest of disagreements. Gripping my wrist so tightly that it would bruise when he pulled me away from chattering with passing pedestrians on the sidewalk. Never wanting me to talk to anyone aside from him.
Flickering my gaze down to the bruises littering my neck, I realize that all of the signs had been there, right in front of me, all along. I just hadn't done anything about them until two nights ago.
"Just what were you thinking? Huh?! Letting that trash walk in here. Into your shop! Damn it, Ida! For fûck sake, what is wrong with you?!" His voice echoed throughout the small confines of the bookstore, "I swear, you have to be just as fûcking crazy as he is. And what was that? He acted like he knew me...who the fûck does that piece of trash think he is? He ain't worth shît, Ida Rose. You better watch who you associate with. I will NOT have any woman of mine around the likes of an Álvaro man!"
"You are just so-so...," I pursed my lips, trying my hardest to form a suitable comeback for someone so hateful, "so mean! You, Sir Lombardi, are a meanie!" Slapping my hands over my mouth, my eyes grew wide in horror. Did I...did I just? Insult someone?! I stared at Jackson, his face flaming red, reminding me of the precious little character that is on the "Snappy Tomatoes Pizza" logo! You guys know the one, right?
A growl sliced through the air, a growl. "You think it's fücking funny to insult someone of my stature in this town, Ida?," he snarled through clenched teeth, "Well, you just keep on laughing, little bïtch. You are going to end up just like her. After his brother ran off like the fücking püssy he was, I used her hole one last time before I slit her throat." I stared at Jackson, my jaw slack, hands having fallen to hang limp at my sides.
"W-what..." My lips quivered as he stared at me, a sadistic grin spread across his face as he took a step forward, "No. No. No." I whispered, taking a small step backwards, my back coming into contact with the wall. Only one thought circled through my mind as I looked at the man that I had thought may have been my one and only, not even less than eight hours ago; I needed to get to the phone and call the police.
