I tiptoe along the tiles;
cool, smooth under
bare feet. To my back-
an exit. In front of me-
an expanse of blue.
I begin to climb skywards,
grasping at flickering lights,
when in a flash, my foot slips
and I fall.Catching myself,
I start to ascend once more.
At the top, I step forward.
Place one foot, the next.
Left, right, left, right.
No turning back.
Toes over the edge,
arms in the air,
jump.
My back curls, toes point,
and I am airborne;
a swallow swooping low, until
fingers make contact and
I am plunged into cold.
Not daring to open my eyes,
I hold my breath,
curl into a ball.
It is silent.
One eye opens, then the other.
Around me; streams of bubbles,
a brown halo of hair.
I unfold, weightlessly
kick upwards,
breathe the air once more,
gasping; a fish out of water,
surrounded by blue.
