I pulled into my driveway. I took a deep breath, "You ready, kiddo?" Autumn made a squealing noise, indicating she was excited about whatever was going to happen. She's a happy baby, always happy, happy, happy.
I got out of the car just as Zayn was pulling up, I smiled at him and motioned for him to come to my car.
"Hey, Hayden!" Zayn said, he walked up and smiled, "And hello to you too, Autumn!" Autumn laughed and covered her head with her hands. Zayn laughed. "Is she always this cute?"
"Always." I smiled and handed him the diaper bag, "Will you take this? There's a spare house key in the mailbox, make yourself at home." I honestly don't know why I'm coming off so nice, I still haven't forgiven him. He never even apologized. He just up and left. And didn't look back once. Maybe it's because Autumn is with me, I don't want her around negative attention, her brain is still young and developing. It took me about five minutes to unbuckle Autumn, she was really squirmy. I guess she was excited... Or she needed a diaper change. Ha, I'll let Zayn handle this one.
Once Autumn was securely in my arms, I walked over to the door, Zayn was already in my house. I took a deep breath then walked in, I shut the door behind me. Zayn was sitting on the couch looking at pictures of Autumn and I, some just of Autumn, a couple of Patrick and Autumn, and a couple of Johnny and Andrew with Autumn. I noticed he was staring at something. I followed his gaze, it was a photo of Andrew and I.
That photo was taken after one of the games. Patrick is a hockey player, he plays for the Chicago Blackhawks. We grew up in Chicago, it was always Patrick's dream to play for the Hawks, but when dad's job caused us to move to Bradford, that dream seemed unreal. One day, Patrick told me he was thinking about moving back to Chicago, I had to go. Patrick got recruited to the team, and now he's one of the best. I'm so proud of him. Johnny is captain, and Andrew is a center.
In the picture, Andrew was helping me skate, he was behind me, I had his hockey stick in my hands and his helmet on my head, his arms were around me and his hands on mine. We were both smiling. That was taken about two weeks after Zayn left, about two weeks before I found out I was going to have Autumn.
Zayn just kept staring at the picture, is he jealous? Why would he be jealous? He's a celebrity. He can have anyone he wants.
"Who's that?" Zayn asked sternly.
"It's just Andrew."
"Who's Andrew?" He said, he was still looking at the picture.
"He's just one of Patrick's friends. We're not together, I haven't dated anyone since-" I stopped talking.
Zayn looked up, "Since us?"
I nodded and looked away. Luckily, Autumn started to squirm in my arms, I could change the subject.
"Alright, Zayn. Let's see what you can do." I said and laughed.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Zayn laughed.
"Well, Autumn needs a diaper change, want to try?"
Zayn looked nervous, "Uh, sure. I guess, she's my daughter. I have to get used to this right?"
"Right."
"Will you guide me through it?" Zayn looked up at me.
I smiled, "Of course. But let me tell you, it's not that easy."
Zayn laughed, "What do I do first?"
"Alright, first you need to wash your hands."
Zayn walked into the kitchen and washed his hands, when he returned I instructed him to lay out a changing pad, and get out a clean diaper. I laid Autumn down on the mat.
"Alright, you have to remove her bottoms."
"Do you want to do it?"
"Zayn, she's your daughter. It's no big deal. Now, do you want to learn or not?"
Zayn nodded, he pulled off the legging type bottoms Autumn was wearing. Autumn started to squirm around.
"Come on, baby girl, hold still." I smiled at her.
"Now what?" Zayn asked. I turned my attention back to him.
I told Zayn what else to do, and he did a surprisingly good job. He had a little trouble getting her bottoms back on, when I went to throw away the diaper, she escaped. She ran away, or crawled away from him. She managed some how to cram her way behind the sofa. I came in and Zayn's head was behind the couch trying to draw Autumn out. I heard her giggle, she started to back up. What she didn't realize was that she was backing up right into my hands. I grabbed her and she laughed really loud. Zayn and I started cracking up.
I sat down on the sofa and patted the seat next to me, motioning for Zayn to join me on the sofa. He hesitated for a minute, but sat down next to me.
"Autumn, do you want to officially meet your daddy?" I said and Autumn smiled, giggled, and began to clap her hands. I laughed to myself, and then handed her over to Zayn. "Zayn, this is your daughter, Autumn."
Zayn took Autumn from my grasp and placed her on his lap, so that she was facing him. He smiled and looked at her, they were adorable together.
"You know, she's never this good around strangers, it's like she knows you're her dad."
"Really? She seems like a really happy little girl."
"Oh, believe me. She's happy. She just doesn't like new people. She gets really shy, she usually just ends up burying her head in my neck and being quiet."
Zayn laughed, "You've done a good job raising her."
"Thank you, I had some help. Patrick has done a lot."
"I wish I could have been here to help too."
"Yeah, me too."
Zayn looked at me, and I looked at him. He just stared into each others eyes. His beautiful eyes.
We were awaken from our trance by a little girl yawning, quite loudly. She rested her head on Zayn. I laughed, I grabbed the remote control and went on Netflix to pick a movie. "Any suggestions?" I asked Zayn.
"You pick."
"The Last Song?" I suggested.
"Whatever you want."
I smiled, "Okay." I clicked on the movie and sat back and watched the screen.
About ten minutes into the movie, I looked over and Autumn was passed out on Zayn's shoulder. Her face was into his neck, and his face was looking down on her. Zayn was also starting to drift off, I sneakily crept off the couch and grabbed my phone. I quickly snapped a couple shots of the two of them. It was adorable.
I nudged Zayn, his eyes shot open, I laughed, "You want to put her in bed?"
Zayn smiled.
"Come on." I lead him upstairs into Autumn's room. Autumn's room was my favorite room in the house, it was my favorite room to design. The walls were painted a light green, little animals were all over the walls, the curtains were white, and the floor was wooden. Except for a corner, the carpet was pale pink, and I had a rocking chair and a bookshelf. When Autumn was a couple months old, I would rock and read her to sleep. She still loves it, I usually read to her every night, but tonight Zayn put her to sleep. Zayn laid her in her crib. He did it so gently, it's almost as if he were a natural. He covered her with a blanket and bent down over her, "Goodnight, baby girl." He said and kissed her forehead.
Zayn stepped away, and I bent down and kissed her cheek, "Sweet dreams, sweetie."
We walked to the door and headed down the steps, we both sat down on the couch and turned our attention back to the movie. The movie was about half over, and I was getting sleepy. I rested my head on Zayn's shoulder and closed my eyes. Before I drifted off to sleep, I felt a pair of soft lips on my forehead, and a strong arm wrap around my waist. I heard a faint whisper, "Sweet dreams, Hayden."
I smiled and drifted into a peaceful sleep.
