Broad term for zombie, although technically, it refers specifically to living people transformed by a virus. The infected typically move at full human speed.

"Fuck!" I whispered to myself as the growling got louder. The creatures body weight pushing against the door was almost too much for me and my feet began to slide away from my body. My heart was beating fast and beads of sweat formed on my forehead. "Son of a bitch," I said as the door clicked.
I slid my back down the door and hit the ground with a thud. I choked back a sob as the groaning exceeded its earlier threshold. I knew that it was safe to stay here any longer but I had been here for an entire week and had no incident. It was the first time I felt, not safe but like I could survive this. I was wrong.
I stood up and walked to the next room to gather the few things that I could call my own and went to the kitchen to grab the rest of the supplies. A few cans and a bag of potato chips were the only thing left. I stuffed them in my bags and hurried outside as the front door busted open from those monsters beating up on it.
I didn't really know what to call them, there were too many clique names or adjectives to describe them with. It just made me feel nauseous to think that zombies were something children and adults had fantasized about for years. I couldn't understand why anyone would want to live through this hell. I couldn't even sleep anymore now that I was alone; my life was just one constant burning pit of despair.
I wasn't sure what my plan was but I needed to find shelter quickly. My mind raced as breached the woods and made a run for it, not caring about sounds even though I should have.
