Chapter 17 - Jethro is In love

Cassie's POV

Summer vacation is over. It's our last year in college. I haven't heard any from Blake. Aubrey texted me once saying that she and Blake had a lot of catching up to do so she apologized for not having a girl talk with me. Not that I mind. I don't know how to talk to Aubrey without feeling guilty, knowing that I have feelings for her boyfriend. Jethro, on the other hand, was always by my side. I don't know if he got tired of having meaningless dates or he's just taking his time looking for someone who will snag his interest.

He picked me up from my condo and drove me to school. He parked the car but I've noticed that he was not moving. I looked to where he is looking and I saw a pretty girl standing at the school's lobby. It seems like she's waiting for someone because she keeps on looking at her phone. I looked at Jethro once again and he looked like he is in trance.

"Someone is in love." I said in a sing song voice. Then I saw his face darkened. When I look at the girl once again, I saw her leaving the lobby with a man's arm wrapped around her waist.

"...and now his heart is broken." I touch his arm. "Hey, you okay?"

"Yeah. Why shouldn't I?" he said smiling. But I noticed his smile didn't reach his eyes.

"Jethro, I am your friend, and in case you forgot, I am smarter than you. I know you really like that girl. Not the "bed her and dump her after" like. Too bad she's taken."

"Of course not. I don't like her." Jethro insisted.  "It's you who I like, remember?"

"If you say so..." I said. and then I asked him, "Do you want me to steal her boyfriend for you?"

Jethro's face lit up. "You'll do that?"

"Got you! I know you really like her, but sorry, I wouldn't do that. I don't know what she sees in him, but he looks like a douchebag. I think you have a competition not only with the girl but with the douchebag part also."

"Haha... very funny." Jethro said sarcastically. "Let's go, you might be late for class." and then he stepped out of the car to open my door.

I got out of the car, and Jethro held my hand. He walked me to class, and there I saw Aubrey and Blake. Of course, Blake will be walking his girlfriend to class. Great!

"Hey girl." Aubrey greeted. "I missed you." Then Aubrey looked at mine and Jethro's hands. She raised an eyebrow and said, "So, looks like you've forgiven him."

Blake sounding angry said, "You easily forgave him? After he hurt you?"

I just shrugged. "I have to go inside." I told Jethro.

Jethro let go of my hand and kissed me on the forehead. "I'll see you at lunch, okay?"

From the corner of my eyes, I saw Aubrey and Blake kissing. It hurts to see them like that, but I know there will be lots of instances when I have to endure the pain. I bit my lower lip and nodded to Jethro.

Classes went as usual. Aubrey and I were still as close as before. I am trying to ignore the guilt I'm feeling. Lunch time comes. Aubrey asked me to go ahead because she had to talk to her friend, Max. While waiting for Jethro in the lobby, I saw the girl who caught Jethro's attention this morning. I decided to approach her.

"Hi. I'm Cassie. Are you new here?" I offered her my hand.

Shaking my hand, she said, "Dianne. Yes, I'm new here."

"I was thinking if you want to hang out some other time? I'll give you my number."

She looked puzzled but typed my number in her phone anyway. I heard my phone ringing and saw an unknown number. "That's mine." She said. A car stopped in front of us. "I'll go ahead. That's my boyfriend." She pointed at the man in the car.

"Oh, okay. See you around."

"Bye, Cassie."

She went inside the car and I looked at my phone. I was wondering where Jethro is. I am so hungry.

"Hi princess." Jethro said, putting his arm on my shoulder.

"Hi yourself... Guess what?" I asked him excitedly.

"What?"

"I think you owe me those new shoes I saw at the mall yesterday."

"What are you talking about?" Jethro sounded confused.

"The pretty girl we saw this morning? Her name is Dianne. And..." I intentionally didn't continue what I'm going to say.

Jethro asked impatiently, "And?!"

"And I have her number..."waving my phone in front of him. "Geez, impatient much!" I said.

Jethro was so happy. "Wow, you're awesome. I love you." He hugged me.

I hugged him back and said, "I love you too."

"Aaawww.... Look at them babe, exchanging I love you's in public." Aubrey said, teasing.

Jethro let go of me, and I looked at Blake.

Blake looks angry. His knuckles were white and his eyes narrowed to Jethro.

Feeling uneasy, I pulled Jethro's hand. "We have to go. I'm so hungry. Bye, guys." and then we left them without giving Blake a glance.
