Chapter 1
I hate the sun.

I hate the summer.

And I hate the beach.

Yet here I was, on the beach. On a summer's day. Fully exposed to the sun.

Sigh.

It was all Riley's fault.

"You see, the sun is not bad. It is good." Riley said to me as if he were addressing a four year old. And he, of all people, should know that I hate being referred to as a kid.

I looked up at him from under the umbrella and scowled, but he merely shook it off with a laugh, his dimples showing.

"C'mon, you're killing me. Turn that scowl into a smile."

I deepened my scowl.

"Okay what do you want? Ask for anything."

"Get. Me. Outta here." I hissed at him.

"Let me rephrase that. Ask me for anything you know I will say yes to." He grinned at me and I rolled my eyes at him.

"Whatever." I muttered.

"So what now?" He slipped off his ray-bans and threw them on the mat.

"How about you run along and go do something stupid like you always do, leave me alone and I might not be tempted to kill you for bringing me here." I replied.

"Are you still angry about that?" He asked.
"Am I still on the beach and under the sun?"
"Technically, you aren't under the . . . " He began but I cut him off.
"Am I?" I pressed.
"Yes."
"Then yes." I answered.

After trying to persuade me to get out from under the umbrella, which he called my comfort zone, he gave up and left my side, probably off to bother some guy. I dug into the picnic basket Riley had packed and took out an apple. I bit into it and the juice rolled down my mouth and unto the sand. I stared out towards the sea.

A kid, probably around 8 or 9 years old, was paddling in the sea with his dad behind him. The boy turned around and whispered something into his dad's ear which he, in return, laughed at.

Aww . . . .

Father-to-son bonding moment.

Bo . . . ring.

I swivelled my head to the right and continued looking around. A blond guy wearing dark blue trunks got on his board, and at the first sight of a wave, fell off his board and crashed into the sea.

Ha. Ha. Funny.

The boy's head resurfaced from under the sea and he started laughing. Some other guys too that saw what had happened were also laughing along with him.

Then I realized that the blond guy was Riley.

Wow, big surprise. Considering the fact that he cannot surf.
He actually took my advice and did something stupid.

The wave took his board but he couldn't be bothered. Riley swam towards the beach, leaving his board behind.

He could always get a new one.

"Did you see me?" He said when he was close enough for me to hear.
"I saw you fall on your butt and into the water if that's what you mean." I replied.

"Forget that part. I meant when I tried to surf." He plopped down on the mat beside me.

"Yeah why did you that?"
