Those Bloody Crows

I should have listened with both ears instead of one.

If I would've my family wouldn't have been slaughtered like cattle.

It was all my fault.

This all started a cold December day.

Everything started out as usual: wake up, eat breakfast, go to school.

That's when I realized that this day wasn't going to be usual.

After school, I walked home to find the door slightly opened.

The cold drifted through the house, and blood covered the floor.

I couldn't see my breath as my eyes widened in horror.

Five large, headless crows were arranged in a pentagram, and a note in the circle with bloody scrawl wrote:

How does one realize their own strength?

I heard a whisper behind me, "Through pain."

I didn't even think as I whipped around to face the source of the whisper, but ended up falling into the pentagram.

As I did, the salt burned my hands. I scampered further nonetheless.

At first I'd thought I saw something, but all that was there was air.

Blood and salt covered my palms. I picked up the note again, the text changed: Conatus posset, si sit fortis.

What the hell? Do demons expect me to know Latin?

I grumbled, wondering what the hell kind of prank this is. Yet I get pushed back trying to leave the pentagram.

It's like a forcefield pushed me back, making me feel dizzy.

Suddenly all five crows spontaneously combusted into blue flames.

A hurricane of midnight feathers flew around me. I slump back. What did I get into?

Back to now, though. My family is dead.

The Latin text haunted me until I looked it up. How powerful you could be if you tried.
