Thanks to Cody, I survived the night and we escaped the city.

We had our own private cabin on the train where we could talk in private. Cody explained as much as he could about what happened that night. The guy that I went on a date with, Allan, was a vampire and his name wasn’t actually Allan. Just one of the aliases he used. Cody assumed that Allan being a vampire wanted my blood. “So, he wanted to suck my blood?” I asked.

Cody took a bite of his hash browns.  “Yes and no. Vampires don’t feed off humans nor are they immortal. The simplify explanation is that blood is where they get their power. Drinking blood directly allows them to age gracefully or become physically stronger. They can also use blood for magic or healing.” Cody explained some blood was more potent than others and that animal blood worked as well, but it wasn’t as strong, so they needed more of it, Oh, and apparently it didn’t taste very good. The more potent a person’s blood was, the more likely they would be killed. Cody thinks my blood potency was high, which was why Allan wanted me.

“Are they weak against sunlight, wooden stakes, and garlic?”

“No. Vampires actually were the ones who used wooded stakes to drain the blood from their victims and save some for later use. The garlic was used to mask the blood from their breath back in the day. The sunlight rumor is simple; they did all their hunting at night when it was easiest to catch someone unnoticed. So people started to believe vampires were weak against the sunlight.”

Cody wasn’t sure about everything else that happened, like being attacked by the Chinese waitress at the restaurant. He thinks it was all unrelated to Allan. The only one we could ask was the fortune cookie guy and we had to wait for him to contact us. Cody never actually meant the guy, just done some odd jobs for him a few times. He paid well, so Cody wasn’t interested in getting details about him. He was also the one who contacted Cody every single time. Each time it was different from of communication.

And where did Cody fit in all of this? Easy, he was a werewolf.

“No, I can’t change into a wolf,” he told me as soon as he said he was a werewolf. “I’m physically stronger and quicker than other human species,” Cody explained, “and my senses are also heightened. Basically, werewolves are super humans. What makes us special is that we can manipulate any metal into any shape we want. Back in the day, silver was the most popular choice. Nowadays, it varies. We can also communicate and manipulate canines to some degree, wolves the best of all.”

So where did I fit in all of this mess? Cody wasn’t sure and we just had to wait for the fortune cookie guy to contact us. For now, it was best to assume I was still in danger and stay out of contact with people I knew before. Cody would continue tagging along with me until everything settled down.

“So what I would owe you for that kind of service.”

Cody grinned at me. “How about a kiss?” he said jokingly.

I rolled my eyes at him.
