Letter two. Just to trigger some interest? Letter three too? Let me know :)

Dear Sam,

I've arrived in France. The landscape is beautiful here. Not that we are given much time to look at it. As soon as we arrived we had to start digging trenches at the border of France, near a place called Verdun.

Some people here are really excited to go to war and fight. I heard a few men say that the war wouldn't last more than a month. But when I look at what we have to do and all the preparation that is going on around here, I am not quite sure whether it will be a short war. Easy for me to say of course, because I don't know anything about war, except that it is horrible most of the time.

We were given the opportunity to practice living in the trenches for a few days. It is awful. There is dirt and faeces everywhere. The smell is intoxicating! It is difficult for me to urinate and anything to that extend here, but I won't bother you with more details about this, because you are my brother.

The weather is not helping to improve the situation here. It rains most of the time, what's new?

Though I have chosen for this myself, I am scared shitless. I am sorry for that word, but there is no other way to put it. I know how to kill and handle a gun by now. Sam, I don't know if I am capable of killing real people, I only know that I have to do it..

I'll be fine. Again, please send my greetings to mum and dad. I love you. I'll write to you again when I can find some clean paper around here.

Love,

Jane
