It was the 10 year anniversary of my parents death, as well as Michael's. Cameron stood by me at Michael's grave, honoring his brother, and my fiancé. I was 21 years old when they all died, Cameron was 19. I remember the day so freshly. Cameron and I had been waiting in the hospital when the doctor came to tell us the news. It was the East Wing of the hospital: white walls, tile floors and the smell of chlorine. I never shed a tear. I couldn't accept that my parents had died. It was Cameron who helped me accept things as they would be.
So today, on the 10 year anniversary of their death, I did something I never expected; I prayed. I prayed that whatever came next, Cameron and I would find a way to get through it. We planned to stay at the graveyard that day and talk but were wise to go inside before the snow storm started. I went back to the city for work that day, getting glances from coworkers now and again.
I entered my office and closed the door, sitting in my swirl chair at my desk. My phone rang. "This is Sheri."
"Miss Sheri, this is Ryan McCoy. I'm a part of the FBI. We have an open investigation on your parents murder as well as the murder of Michael Lyondell. We ask that you come to the sheriff's station later this afternoon to discuss this further." He said.
"I don't understand, Sir. My parents and Michael died from a disease, they weren't murdered." I was dumbfounded that the man had even thought my parents could have been killed.
"Miss Sheri I know this is a lot to take. We have reason to believe that they were administered a large, fatal dose of lead poisoning. It is untraceable in their blood DNA however, there was residue in their bone marrow." He informed me.
"I understand..When should I meet you?" I needed to find out the details, I needed to know the truth.
"As soon as you can. How does 5 pm sound?" I glanced at the clock on my computer, it was 2 pm now.
"That sounds like a deal. See you then. Goodbye!" I said and hung up. I sat silently in my office for a while. I didn't get any of my work done, my mind was too preoccupied that the reason behind my parents death was...homicide by poison. I had to call Cameron.
"Hello?" He answered.
"Cameron, can you meet me in my office please? We need to talk...it's about Michael and my parents."
"Of course, give me a few minutes and I'll head up. Glad we work only two floors apart from each other, huh?" I didn't respond. "Hey, you okay?" I started wheezing, I cant breathe!
"Help!" I gasped for air. Why cant I breathe? Oh no I'm having a panic attack aren't I? "Cameron plea- ca-breath-!" I tried to say over the phone. There was no response from the other line. "Cam-ron. Please!"
"Just breathe for me okay? I'm almost there." I tried taking slow breaths but it wasn't working. Finally I saw Cameron running into my office. "Skylar, oh my God, okay. I'm gonna sit you on the floor okay?" We moved carefully so I was now sitting on the floor leaning against Cameron. "Okay copy my breathing alright? That's it, just slowly in and out. That's good" We sat on the floor for maybe 30 minutes. It was a long process to be able to breathe again. But Cameron stayed by me the whole time. Eventually I was able to breathe again.
My only thought: What the hell just happened?!
