Merlin stared at the clock as if trying to force it to make the bell ring. He hated Mr. Simmons's 8th grade class, the only good part was sitting next to his best friend Will. It was only the second week of school and it was starting to get ridiculous how already monotone everything felt.

Finally, about five minutes later, the bell at Ealdor Elementary rang, ending the class that seemingly lasted for an eternity. Merlin thanked whatever being was in the sky and ran off to start his twenty minute walk home. Usually, Will would walk with him but recently his mother forced him to take the bus because they had moved a further distance away from their old house that was right next to Merlin. Now, Merlin had to stand the beating sun of summer all alone, but at least he had his headphones.

While Merlin was walking, this fairly flashy car drove by and while Merlin was admiring it, the blond man in the passenger smiled at him. Obviously, Merlin smiled back and thought nothing of it. At least until it started happening every day.

Maybe Merlin hadn't noticed him before because he was preoccupied with Will or maybe the blond man was new but either way, Merlin now looked forward to seeing him drive by, even if he only gets to see him for five seconds at a time. Merlin wondered if he would ever get to see him in person.

Merlin had daydreams of walking into a nearby store and seeing him there or seeing him pulled over for some odd reason and getting the chance to see him better. Either way, Merlin really, really wanted to see him. His hopes were high, it was a fairly small town at least. That was until the end of school came around and his mom delivered him bad news.

For the summer and the next two years, Merlin and his mom would be living in London with Hunith's dad. Her dad was ill and instead of just driving up and staying for who knows how long, Hunith decided they would live there for two years and then she would send Merlin back if she was still needed there in London.

The first year was okay, Merlin was getting used to the entire new schooling but it was okay. He did develop somewhat of a shyness you could say, but  in his defense he was in an entire new country. The year had went by fast, well as fast as it could with the usual teenage drama. Guess that happened in every country.

The second year was better. By then, Merlin had caught up with British slang and had even picked up somewhat of an accent. While it wasn't usual for people to change their speech so quickly, Merlin didn't want to be even more of an outcast so he tried actively to pick up on their way of speaking, not that it was too different to be honest. By the end of the second year, Hunith could've sworn her son was born in England and not the United States.

Over the two years, Merlin never did forget about the blond man. Well boy he should say but who really cares. Since Merlin's memory never did let him forget the man's face, Merlin was 'forced' to think about him... all the time.

It was the end of the year and as Hunith promised, Merlin was sent home. His mum needed to stay in London so, Merlin was sent to live with his uncle Gaius,  and he had to go to school at a different high school than Will was at. Of course. Now Merlin had to spend his junior year at a school where he knows nobody and will be even more of an outcast because of his accent. Just great.
