It had been 12 hours since I left Riley's house and something about my departure seemed off. Knock. Knock. Knock. I was eating my cereal at the breakfast table when I got up to get the door. Two people were standing there.
"Child Protective Services," a woman in a white vest said.
Panic. Who called them? I surely didn't. My mom wouldn't. Rosie doesn't know what it is. Only left one person who knows what's going on in my life, Riley.
"Why did you get a call," I said leaning against the door frame trying to be as calm as possible.
"We heard there was suspicion of child abuse in this house?"
"There isn't. So I don't understand why you'd get that call." I tried to sound confident but I knew I failed.
"Well, are you the head of this house?"
"No ma'am."
"We need to speak to the head, a John Friar."
"He's not here," that was a lie he was here, he was just drunk, yes at 7 AM on a weekday.
"Well we will be back later, you look like you need to get to school."
"Okay ma'am. Thank you." I closed the door, if they came back I'd never hear the end of it. So I knew who I had to talk to at school.
-
"Riley!" I yelled in the hall, everyone went silent. It wasn't meant to be an angry scream that's just how it came out. People were frightened of me, oops. Everyone cleared out, until it was just Riley, her friend Zay and me.
"Woah buddy," Zay said blocking me off from Riley. I wasn't going to hurt her I just had to control my anger issues.
"I'm not going to hurt her, I'm sorry for yelling," I said in a much calmer voice.
"It's okay Zay," she turned her head toward him. "Will you leave us alone for a minute, Zay?"
"Yeah okay," he shifted his head towards Riley then towards me and walked away.
"What do you need Lucas?"
"You called CPS on my father."
"I'm sorry for not telling you Lucas but Mr. Wether said I had to break confidentiality rules if you or someone you knew was-" I cut her off by hugging her. She was taken back I wasn't punching her. I pulled away from the hug.
"Thank you, Riley. I knew you had good intentions, just one thing I'm going to need somewhere to sleep, or Rosie is going to need somewhere to sleep for a long time."
"We have somewhere for you to both stay," she said warmly.
"We?"
"My family and I, my mom's the one who called CPS. But first she guaranteed you two could sleep in our guest room."
"Thank you, Riley."
"Well we have to go to psychology or we're going to be late."
People had finally re entered the hall but people were confused why Riley and I were walking with each other.
"Mr. Friar, Miss Matthews, you're late."
"Sorry Mr. Wether we just had one last question to ask before class started."
"Oh yes, we need to do project progress reports," the whole class groaned at Riley reminding Mr. Wether.
We pulled out our sheets, Riley said she had told Mr. Wether about my situation and was going to speak to Topanga later today.
-
"So what's the plan for today?" I whispered durning Mr. Wether's boring lecture about relationships.
"What," she said not lifting her head from her focus on the paper.
"For Rosie and I to come to your house, we don't have anything from our house and Rosie didn't know what CPS was."
"Well, we're going to pick up Rosie and Auggie from school then head straight to my house avoiding yours at all costs. And don't worry my mom has your stuff problem, under control."
Her mom had it under control, that couldn't be good.
a/n: Sorry for the fairly short chapter I didn't want to change the perspective half way through so I might do a double update!
