Jack shouldered his bag. The nineteen-year-old had been so excited to travel the world. But now, here he stood, in front of a crappy, old, motel with one bag, no friends, almost broke, and without clothes or toiletries. All he had was a bag of supernatural crap like a spirit board, a deck of tarot cards, a giant thing of salt, a pentagram, a crystal, a bottle of holy water, a bottle of black sand, and a small pocket cross. Jack wasn't religious, he never had been, but he knew enough to know that crosses kept away vampires, and that he wasn't crazy about the smell of garlic.
Jack exhaled with a small shrug and started walking towards the door of the motel.
"Welcome to Caultal Motel, what can I do for you sir?" The girl at the desk said in a monotone voice like she had said one too many times. She had purple hair that was pulled back into messy bun on top of her head. A cigarette hung out of her mouth at a weird angle and she was reading a punk rock fashion magazine.
"I'd like a room." Jack told her, trying to fish some money out of his pocket.
"Yeah, no crap." She said rudely. Jack glared at her.
"Are any open?" He growled, trying not to snap. He had a long day and this sarcastic smoker was the last thing he needed today.
"Uh, yeah, what do we look like? An actual good motel?" She said.
"I don't think there's such a thing. How much?" He asked her.
"Pff, look, I'm a jerk, but I'd have to be Satan's spawn to make you pay to stay in this dump. Tell ya what, gimme a couple bucks and you can stay the night." Jack felt a smile settle across his face. He fished a couple bucks out of his pocket and gave them to her.
"Thanks, that's real nice of you, I'm pretty low on cash. Hey, my names Jack Halten."
"Look toots, I don't remember askin' for your life story, here's ya room key, and ya room number is 2B, see'ya." Jack felt embarrassed. He took the keys and walked up the steps.
He jabbed the key into the door and fell in while opening it. He stumbled to the bed and tossed his backpack to the floor. He flopped onto the bed and passed out into a dreamless sleep.
