I grab my wallet from the living room coffee table before opening the front door for Lexi. She's my best friend, we've known each other since Kindergarten. We were supposed to be at The Cafe downtown an hour ago but she was late like always. I exit my house and walk behind her towards The Cafe, it was only a few minutes away and neither of us had gotten cars yet.
I enjoyed walking behind her. The way her long brown hair bounced against her back was mesmerizing and I don't know why. "Wait up." I say when I realized I was falling behind. "You were an hour late, and now you wanna hurry?"
"Shut up!" She says but slows her pace until I catch up. She punches my arm playfully but I hardly feel it. "You punch like a girl."
"Maybe 'cause I am one, Dick Weed." She laughs. I smile at her and try not to look too long into her big green eyes no matter how hard it was. I've done that before and it was pretty awkward.
I've always thought about what it'd be like to hold her hand but that'd be weird. I push the thought out of my mind as I see The Cafe down the road. We reach the entrance after a minute and I rush to open the doors for her. "Ladies first." I say with a smirk. Instead of going in though, she pauses outside the door before saying, "Go in then."
I laugh and roll my eyes. "What a comedian. Go in."
I head in behind her and we find a booth to sit at by a window. She sits across from me since she thinks sitting next to her is weird. I guess I agree.
"So, what do you think they serve here. Anything good?" I ask.
"Your mom." She answers so casually that it makes it five times funnier.
"Oh my God." I laugh and shake my head. "You're so stupid." I flip my hair, brushing the blonde strand from my face with my hand.
After a few seconds, a boy around my age comes over to us holding menus. He stood about 6' foot and had black hair that was only shaved on the sides. But the hair that was left over was long and combed to one side. He hands us our menus once he reaches us.
"Welcome, guys. I'm Tucker, I'll be your server for today. Got anything quick you'd like to order before reading the menus?" He says to us, and it sounds so well rehearsed coming from him. I wonder how many times he has to say that a day.
I really didn't have anything in mind, but Lexi sure did. "Um...I think I'll have
a fruit smoothie.""Alright."
"And I'm good for now, thanks." I say.
"Cool." The waiter says before walking back behind the counter, leaving us to our menus.
I start browsing the menu until I see Lexi look from hers, up to me. "That guy was kinda cute. Like...really cute." She turns her head towards where he had walked off as if he'd be there.
I don't know why but what she said made me feel weird. "Uh, kay?" I look back down at my menu but can't focus on anything I was reading.
Minutes felt like seconds and before I knew it, our waiter was back with her smoothie. He sets it down on the table before asking, "You guys ready to order?"
I look at him, wanting to say something smart back but I knew he'd think I was crazy. It wasn't his fault she found him attractive.
"I think I'll just have a bacon burger and um..Coke." I say.
My order was simple but, of course, Lexi's was the opposite. Sometimes I think she just talks to hear herself talk. "Um..I think I'll have whatever he's having but add in a few waffles with whipped cream and strawberries if you can. And maybe a few French toast pieces, by a few I mean four. And top those with powder sugar if you wouldn't mind, and....um that's all. No, wait. How about orange juice." She shuts the menu and smiles up at him. "Thanks!" She hands him the menu.
"Hm...alright." He laughs, taking our menus and turning away for the second time.
I sit back and begin the wait while she takes her smoothie from the tray it came on. It caught my attention though, when her face lit up at a napkin.
"What?"
"Look!" She lifts up the napkin and shows me the writing on it. "He gave me his number."
I can't help but sigh, "Yippee."
I watch as she folds it up ever so carefully as if it'd break, and slide it in her pocket. To avoid any more possible eye contact, I pull out my phone and pretend I'm looking at something interesting for the next 10 minutes until the food comes. I thought it'd be longer with all the stuff she ordered.
He sets the large tray he carries on the table by ours and begins taking off each plate and setting then in front of us. "You know what?" I say impulsively. "I think we'll just take it all to go. Can we get some boxes?" I begin removing my wallet from my back pocket, actually quite nervous of the bill, but whatever I need to do get away from him faster.
"No, hey. Don't worry about it. On me." Tucker smirks and winks at Lexi.
That was it. I stood and walked over to the soda machines across the way and got the boxes myself. As I bring them back though, I get so heated when I see our waiter sitting where I had been across from Lexi. Flirting and carrying on. I was ready to do something I'd probably regret until I noticed a bigger guy walking at a fast pace over to our table.
"Excuse me?" He says impatiently to Tucker.
"Yes?" Tucker smiles back.
"Why are you sitting on the job? Get up and get back to work. Thanks."
"Right. What are you gonna do, fire me?"
"No. But don't think I won't tell the manager about this." The man threatens before walking away.
I watch as Tucker rolls his eyes in disgust then says to Lexi, "I better get back to work."
By then, I'm at the table. "Yeah, you probably should." I say. I look at him and see his glare but I look back down at the table and start packing the food away into the boxes.
He ignores me after a moment anyways and looks back to Lexi. "Maybe we can hang out sometime?"
"You thought." I quickly reply but don't look at him.
Lexi doesn't say anything either so I guess he felt that was his cue to leave. He stands and is sure to shoulder check me on his way passed.
I don't do anything though because I wanted him to leave as soon as possible. Lexi helps me pack the rest of the food away before leaving me with the boxes to carry. She stomps away and out the doors without saying another word.
