Flame and Frost

Disclaimer: This is a fan fiction of Montello High: School of Gangsters by Siel Alstreim. The characters and Van’s awesomeness all belong to the author. The facts are also mashed-up. (Trinity is one year below than Summer, right? Anyway, let’s just pretend they’re classmates or what :D)

The moment Jin Cast set his eyes on her; he knew there will be trouble. Burning trouble.

It’s their P.E class and they’re playing volleyball. Jin opened the bottled water and drinks all its contents in record time, the liquid soothing his dry throat. He looked at the girls that are currently playing in the court, his eyes having a hard time not to look at her. But he tried in vain. For anything that associates the name Summer Leondale always ends up the same way.

In vain he tried to stay away from her.

In vain he tried not to be close to her.

In vain he tried not to care for her.

The list can go on forever.

Its Mirden’s turn to serve and she sent the ball towards the other side of the net furiously. Trinity spike the ball with great fervor, the force exerted to send the ball hurling fast to the other team is apparent by the sound produced when her hand made contact with the ball. Summer’s ringing voice pierce the tight silence when she shouted “Mine!” She blocks the attack and nod at the girl with light brown hair who is turn assist her in her next move. Light brown haired girl tossed the ball in the air and summer jumped and spike the ball so hard that the girl on Trinity’s team who tried to catch it let out a yelp; the skin on the girl’s hand now turning a deep red color. Summer’s smirk didn’t go unnoticed by Jin’s eagle-like eyes. Typical Leondale.

Their P.E. instructor signaled Summer’s turn to serve. The ball flew with intensity and was passed back and back, noises are made every time the ball made contact with skin.

“i’ve never seen players with this penchant for winning. In a volleyball game” Jin thought to himself.

Jin’s eyes darted across from where he was; at the other side is the Black Government sitting with leisure. Ethan was watching the game seriously. His left hand clutching a mineral bottle and a towel on his other hand. Trinity’s team scored, Summer’s cursing and Makki’s cheers came altogether. If Jin got it right, Makki also cheered for Summer’s team when they scored a while ago. Makki was wearing an amused expression.

“The bastard has some loyalty issues” Jin thought.

And there’s Van Freniere.

Jin watch Van as the other one intently watch Summer go for the kill and spike the ball; sending Trinity a good few steps back as the latter tried to reciprocate the attack.

Summer’s team scored and Makki cheer for them with incoherent nonsenses pouting from his mouth.

A smirk appeared on Van’s face and Jin curiously followed his eye path.

Curiosity killed the cat. Good thing he’s human, so it’s only like he’s on the verge of dying. Screw it.

Jin saw as Summer returned Van’s smirk with her signature badass one, but with lights dancing in her eyes.

And now, everything made sense. The determination all over Trinity’s face, Makki’s weird gestures in a way of cheering, Van’s arrogant smirk and Summer…who seems so engrossed to win. It’s not just a friendly game in P.E. They’re not fighting for grades. They’re fighting over something else…or someone. And that damn hurt.

Trinity’s team mate positioned to serve. The board on the right side indicates the scores. It’s a tie. 24-24.

“This will be one exciting game” Jin thought sarcastically.

The girl was about to serve when the P.E. instructor interrupt her. She gave the girl a new ball because the other one already lacks air.

The new ball flew from one side of the court to the other. Spike, toss, and the occasional shouts of “Mine!” Two minutes elapse and the ball is still being thrown from side to side. Trinity gave her last shot, spiking the ball with the remaining strength she has. Summer block it…or tried to. But her left foot caught and got tangled with her right one and she staggered backwards.

Losing a point. Losing the game.

The other team cheered loudly but Jin can still hear Summer’s string of profanities. The exhaustion was evident in her features and she’s breathing heavily. Trinity gave her a victorious grin and Summer glare at her in return.

But Trinity’s triumph was short-live. Her smile faded and was replaced by quivering lips when Van approaches Summer.

Jin can still hear Summer’s repeated “Fuck this’s” and “Stupid Foot’s” but she instantly stop when she saw Van’s countenance towering over her.

“A perfect game, ruined by your balancing skills…or lack thereof” he said with a teasing grin.

And the next thing made Jin flinched and Trinity to look away.

Giovanni Freniere just offered his hand to Summer.

Yeah, Trinity won yet it seems like the trophy itself found its way on Summer’s midst.

“Stop looking. Being a sucker for when it comes to her is enough. Being a sucker for pain is way out of the line” Zach appeared out of nowhere.

“What can I do? One comes with the other”

“And you don’t want to let go of one, so the other torture you”

And in vain he tried to have her.

He never thought that the one he considers as his greatest battle would be a losing one.

Later that night, Jin is still wide awake; never minding the clock signaling its already 3:45 in the morning. He’s deep in his own train of thoughts.

Her parents named her just fine. Summer. Sun. Flames. And she consumes him. And a willing victim as he was, he keeps on coming back to the fire. He was like a moth that flies around the candle. He thought he can be enough. But he’s wrong.

It’s funny how the clichéd adage fits; Opposite attracts.

He doesn’t want to admit but he knew that Summer’s burning personality can only be melted by Van’s coldness.

Heat and Cold.

Flame and Frost.
