Beep beep. Beep beep. The sound of her pearl white alarm clock aroused Astyr from a deep slumber. Steadily, not wanting to wake, she thrust her hand out from beneath her warm blanket and blindly hunted until she could feel the cold metal button that silenced the annoying beeps. After doing so, Astyr made the effort to swing her legs from underneath her milk colored blanket and hoist her limp body to a standing position.
She looked about her room; at the mirror that her mother had once used before she died last year from a shark attack just off the coast. She missed her so much, especially the sound of her voice and her light blue eyes that smiled out at the world. She looked in the mirror and gazed into her own eyes, her eyes that resembled her mother’s so much.
After brushing back her long blond hair and braiding it until it reached the middle of her back, Astyr changed into a pair of jean shorts and a light green tank top. When she was done getting dressed for school, Astyr strolled over to her balcony, which overlooked the largest beach in Australia. Glancing down, she saw one of her best friends, Luke, strolling along the edge of the water with his hands stuffed in his pockets. Not wanting to miss him, she threw her backpack over her shoulder, slipped on a pair of tan flip flops and practically flew down the stairs.
Peering into the kitchen, she saw her dad had left her a note on the counter that said he had left for work three hours ago because his company was running behind. He would be working late. Astyr sighed, she wished her dad was around more often, but she knew he was only working so hard to guarantee her a bright future and to put dinner on the table every night.
While opening the cabinet above the sink Astyr managed to knock a box of cereal down, spilling pieces all over the counter. She rummaged through the supply closet nearby until she could find the hand broom and dustpan. Then she piled the shrewd Captain Crunch into the trash bin and flipped the lid shut until the little button on the side of the can clicked. Grabbing a plain bagel from the shelf, Astyr sprinted out the door and headed towards where she spotted Luke, running at full speed trying not to trip over her own feet. While taking bites of the bagel she slowed down to a walk, finally approaching Luke with a huge grin on her face.
“Hey Luke,” Astyr said, while waving with her free hand for her other was holding her breakfast.
“Astyr!” Luke yelled, jogging forward to finish closing the slowly diminishing space between them. He grabbed her by the waist and twirled her around a couple of times, making Astyr’s braid fly behind her.
Yelping in surprise at the sudden action, she screamed for Luke to put her back down, but she had hint of playfulness in her voice. Deciding to listen to her, Luke set her down gently in front of him, still holding onto her arm so she wouldn't fall over, until she regained her balance.
“What was that for? You owe me a new bagel!” Astyr demanded, since her half a bagel was wrenched from her hand during the twirling.
“Sorry, I’m just freaking out! Can you believe it’s finally the last day of school before summer vacation? After today, we are seniors at last!” Luke explained in one long breath.
A smile played lightly at the edges of Astyr’s lips when she looked at Luke and his excited face. She thought to herself, Luke was right. After today they would be at the top of the food chain at Westover High. The thought made her giddy with anticipation.
