Beep beep. Astyr’s hand flew out from beneath the blanket before the beeps could even finish ringing. Once the sound was done echoing throughout the room, Astyr swung her legs that were heavy with sleep over the edge of her mattress and her feet landed on the ground with a noisy thud. She threw the warm fleece blanket to the side and raised herself up off the bed so she was now standing at its side. Astyr lifted her arms above her head and stretched before letting out a huge yawn while rubbing her tired eyes. She took a deep breath and let it out in a content sigh. Astyr felt like a million butterflies were in her belly because she was somewhat nervous but completely excited for Manano Island.
Astyr glanced at the alarm clock that read “8:00”. She had an hour before she had to meet Luke and Chase at their spot. Astyr practically skipped over to her mirror and stared at the girl looking back at her. Her bight eyes were wild with excitement. She blinked a couple of times then sighed when she looked at her hair, a perfect example of a bedhead. She giggled and ran her fingers through it as she braided her hair into her signature braid that ran down her back.
After changing into a pair of jean shorts and light blue shirt, Astyr flew down the stairs and burst into the kitchen, stopping short when she saw the man sitting at the kitchen table with a bowl of Cheerios in front of him and a newspaper in his hand. He looked to be in his middle forties and had blond hair that resembled Astyr's very own. His eyes weren't blue like hers but instead they were a warm hazel.
“Where are you going in such a hurry?” The man questioned, raising an eyebrow at Astyr.
“Good morning to you too, Dad.” She replied rolling her eyes at him and walking towards the fridge.
He chuckled lowly in response. “Good morning baby girl.”
Astyr smiled to herself. He only called her “baby girl” when he was in a really good mood, which wasn’t very often. With so much stress of his company threatening to shut down, he barely got a moments rest. As a result, he has a serious look on his face all the time but right now he was grinning slightly which made Astyr pleased.
“Why such the good mood today?” Astyr asked, while pulling out the carton of milk and closing the fridge. ”Not that I’m complaining at all, I was just wondering.” Shrugging her shoulders a bit and stealing a glance at her father. He was staring at her and smiling like a fool. Now it was Astyr’s turn to raise an eyebrow at him.
“Oh no reason… just that they decided not to lay off any of the employees in the company…” He said really excitedly while practically bouncing in his chair, which was actually pretty funny to watch. Sometimes he acted more like a kid than the responsible adult he is.
“Seriously? That’s great!” Astyr exclaimed, putting down the cereal bowl she had gotten down on the counter and pranced to him tackling him in a giant bear hug. She couldn’t help but feel ecstatic for him. This was one huge accomplishment and a step closer to the overall goal, not letting them shut it down.
Her dad laughed out loud now and hugged Astyr back, but not with as much force. “I know!” He said pulling back from the hug and Astyr went back to making her breakfast. “But enough about me now, what are your plans for today?”
Astyr returned to the table and sat across from him and began eating her Captain Crunch. “Today is the day Luke, Chase and I are boating over to Manano Island to hike on some trails and explore the island. Remember? We’ve been planning this for weeks!” She explained to him, excitement rising in her voice.
