It started with a simple game, which had then grown into something none of them had ever anticipated.
Perhaps the most unexpected thing however was how Karkat had found himself falling for a certain prankster, by the name of John Egbert.
He didn't look all that special, with his buck teeth and messy hair but Karkat felt inexplicably attracted to him.
Over the course of their time together, they'd grown to be friends, and more. Even if he wouldn't admit it, Karkat couldn't stop himself from falling in love with John's dorky personality.
He wanted to wait for the right time to tell him but the right time never came. Still, he stalled. Surely, he could wait a little longer.
Then, they won.
It was hard to believe that this day was finally here. Sure it's what everyone had hoped for but no one had really believed they could do it. Eventually, it was simply a matter of living through the next day.
But now, here they were. Ready to claim their prize, all their dreams were about to come true. So why did Karkat feel so unhappy?
He looked to his side and saw his answer. He still hadn't told John how he felt.
Karkat looked up at John and smiled weakly, "HEY, WE DID IT."
"Yeah, we did." John said sadly, smiling back.
"WHAT'S WRONG?"
"I, Karkat, what happens now?"
"NOW? I GUESS WE BECOME GODS AND GO HOME."
"So, I go back to earth? Can I still visit?"
"I DON'T KNOW, IT'S POSSIBLE THAT, FUCK ARE YOU CRYING?" He meant it to sound teasing but even as he said it, his own voice cracked and he could feel tears start to form.
"Karkat, what if I never see you again?" Karkat found himself speechless for once. Could it be that John returned his feelings?
"DON'T SAY THAT, DON'T FUCKING SAY THINGS LIKE THAT."
"So I'm right, we're never gonna see each other again?" Tears were starting to trickle down his face and Karkat knew the same thing was happening to him.
It was now or never, "JOHN, I'M FLUSHED FOR YOU."
"Karkat..."
"AND I KNOW TOU HAVE THAT HUMAN THING WHERE YOU'RE NOT GAY OR WHATEVER BUT I'M FLUSHED FOR YOU ANYWAYS AND I HAD TO TELL YOU BEFORE." His voice wavered "BEFORE THIS IS OVER."
"Karkat, I like you to. I guess I just didn't want to admit it either."
"YOU DO?"
John nodded and threw his arms around Karkat, hugging him tightly. "Karkat, is this it? Is this Game over."
"NO, THIS IS JUST THE LEVEL ONE, I'LL FIND YOU AGAIN. SOMEDAY, SOME HOW. AND THEN YOU'LL NEVER LEAVE ME."
