Declan paced around his parent's kitchen, knowing that Nate had gone to get Amethyst and was bringing her there.
An hour earlier he and his brother had gotten into a fist fight until Devon convinced him to hear Amethyst out, on which he finally agreed.
Mari had been summoned as well and if he found out that she had anything to do with this, he was personally going to wring her little neck.
He shuddered at the thought that he'd almost slept with her the night of the charity event but Am's face kept popping up and after his head had cleared that night, he knew deep down she hadn't cheated.
He was nervous to see here again. Their home had been empty and cold without her and he knew it was his fault.
Why couldn't he have just talked to her about it? Why did he let Mari worm her way in again? God*amn it he was pissed at himself!
"Jesus Amethyst!" He heard Devon exclaim and then he walked into the kitchen, shocked at the sight before him.
His beautiful, precious sweet girl looked like death. When she took off her coat, her body was painfully thin.
Her eyes were dull and lifeless, her once glossy hair was matte and she had massive circles under her eyes. He had done this to her and he would never forgive himself.
"Let's get this over with" her voice rasped. "I'm extremely tired and I don't feel well." Devon stepped to her and said something very quietly, then she nodded.
"Do you remember when Devon went to California for a medical symposium?" Everyone nodded, so she continued.
"He didn't go because it had anything to do with his job. He went because a colleague had told him about a fertility doctor, based here in Boston and she was giving a lecture on a procedure she pioneered.
This procedure helped women who had been sexually mutilated from abuse be able to conceive and have children.
Devon went to meet with her on behalf of Declan and I. He wanted to know, in her professional opinion, if her technique could help me.
She was doing a luncheon at The Four Seasons and had agreed to meet me. I asked Devon to come with me because he has a medical degree and I trusted him to let me know if he thought it was too dangerous, etc.
I made an appointment to see her. We did an initial consultation, she read my medical file from the night I was admitted after I was attacked.
In her opinion, she felt she could help me give Declan a child so I went forward with the procedure and Devon was with me.
I couldn't take a chance, getting Declan's hopes up, if it failed. I didn't want him to look at me as a failure because I couldn't give him a child."
She looked at Declan for the first time since she'd been there and said "The videos that she gave you, those were of Devon taking me to appointments and making sure everything was medically safe.
I didn't sleep with your brother. I love you. Not anyone else. But you chose to believe a woman who's been so desperate to get you into bed, that she made up lies and you believed her."
She reached behind her neck and unhooked the diamond pendant that he'd given her and that held her engagement ring and laid it on the island.
"Am, please" Declan's voice broke, but she couldn't look at him, her shoulders slumped in defeat and hurt.
They all watched in horror as her body swayed and collapsed in a heap on the floor.
