Chapter One// Mall Food Ain't Shit
Listen to summer depression by girl in red for this chapter
Summer seemed to have gone by so fast. It felt like just last week I was a junior stressing over the SAT's and now I'm going into senior year stressing over if any of the colleges I applied to will send me an acceptance letter. My best friends seemed to notice me being distracted since I'm brought back to reality when Rose claps her hands in front of my face, causing me to jump, my focus back to the table we're sitting at in the mall food court.
"Amber, have you listened to anything I just said?" Rose looks at me, an eyebrow raised and her eyes looking straight into mine.
I play with a strand of my wavy dark brown hair, biting my lip nervously. "I'm sorry, I'm just nervous about college."
My other best friend, Sophie who is sitting next to me places her hand on my shoulder. "You don't need to be stressing so much. We all know you are one of the smartest people in our class. You practically have a 4.0 gpa."
"Still, you know I hate not having control over things and right now, I have no control over whether those schools will accept me or not."
Rose rolls her hazel eyes, a playful smile on her face. "Girl, just calm down, eat your salad and enjoy the rest of the summer vacation we have left."
I smirk at her, her usual straightforward attitude always putting sense into my head. "Fine mom, I'll relax." But I don't take a bite of my salad, I just play with the lettuce with my fork, calculating the calories of what I ate today.
"Now back to what I was saying. Alex is throwing a party tomorrow as a 'welcome back to school, let's get drunk together' event. Now, using my girlfriend privileges, I'm allowed to invite some people and you both are coming with me." She points her fingers at both me and Sophie.
Sophie looks nervous. "Rose, you know parties aren't my thing and an Alex Barrett party usually ends in a disaster of some sorts."
I nod in agreement. "I'm with Soph on this. Alex always has a bunch of people in his house especially when he's quarterback of the football team and owns one of the biggest houses in town. It also means Reese will be there and I don't need to see his annoying face."
"You both are coming," Rose lowers her eyes, a mischievous glint in them. "Or I will tell Frankie about Sophie's huge crush on him."
Sophie's green eyes widen, her curly blonde hair bouncing as she stands up. "You wouldn't dare!"
Rose leans back crossing her arms across her chest. "Oh, I will."
Sophie let's out an exasperated sigh, slumping back down in her seat. "Fine, I'll come along."
"Good choice Newton," Rose's gaze then turns to me. "You're coming too or then it's your fault if I tell Frankie."
I look at Sophie who is using her puppy dog eyes at me, the look she knows I can't resist. "I'll go but only for Soph."
Sophie visibly relaxes while Rose looks satisfied with my answer.
"You're the Devil, Rose White."
Rose shrugs her shoulder, taking a sip of her soda. "The one and only."
We chat for a few more minutes before we get up to throw away our trash.
"Amber, you barely ate any of your food." Sophie says as she looks down at my untouched salad.
"Oh, I'm not that hungry but I'll save it for later." I lie, not wanting them to ask any more questions.
Sophie only nods while Rose looks at me with a questioning look as I slip the salad back into the to-go bag it came in.
When we start to walk towards the exit, I hear the voice of the most annoying being on earth.
"Well, if it isn't Amber Reyes." I turn around to see Reese along with Frankie and Alex.
"Hello Di Angelo." I say through gritted teeth.
Reese seemed like he was about to say something back but Alex interrupts him when he walks up to Rose, giving her a quick kiss.
"Hey babe." He smiles at her lovingly. Even though Alex is sadly best friends with Reese, he is one of the nicest guys I know and he makes Rose really happy and has been a great boyfriend for the last year they've been together.
"Hey, I thought you were at practice?" She asks, wrapping her arms around his neck while he wraps his arms around her waist.
"Coach ended early so I wanted to surprise you since I knew you'd be here."
"You had to bring this idiot along?" I ask, pointing at Reese.
"He's my ride so don't get your panties in a twist." Reese responds, that ridiculous smirk tugging at his lips.
I raise my eyebrow. "Hm, didn't know you thought about my panties, Di Angelo."
"Don't flatter yourself, Reyes. You are the last thing on mind." He takes a challenging step towards me but I don't move from my spot.
Before I can come back with a remark, Frankie groans. "Guys, can we please not fight right now?"
"I agree," Sophie says. "Let's all just relax. "
Frankie smiled at her causing her to blush in return, averting his gaze.
I run a hand through my hair, a sigh escaping my lips. "Fine, no more fighting."
"For now."
I glare at him. "Do you always need to have the last word?"
"Do you always have to-"
"Reese," Alex interrupts. "Leave it alone."
Reese just rolls his eyes. "Fine."
"We should go anyway." Rose says before kissing Alex. "I'll see you tomorrow."
Alex nods and Rose gets out of his grasp. I sigh of relief when we start to make our way out of the mall. But as we leave, I can feel Reese's eyes on me causing me to look back but when his eyes meet mine, there's something different about them. I can't put my finger on it but all I know is that he's still an asshole and that when I get home, I'll be throwing out this salad.
