The hot California sun beat down on my long bare legs. It was a hot Las Angela's summer day and I was just leaving the airport to wait in the shade for my aunt Mary to pick me up. I sat my big silver suitcase on the curb, and sat down on the fiery hot concrete ground. Knowing it would be a while until she arrived, I pulled out my old tattered copy of The Tale of Despereaux and started where I had left off. It was the part where Despereaux had lost his tail. I read the passage time and again. It was so scary, but Despereaux still survived. I continued to read the familiar pages when I heard a screeching noise and my head popped up. Chase? I thought to myself as my big brother hopped out of his shiny red sports car. Chase had always been so close with me and I had missed him while at my mom and Dad's house for the school year.
"CHASE" I shouted jumping up from the sidewalk and leaping over to hug him. "Oh Chase I've missed you so much, how has it been living with aunt Marry" I interrogated wrapping my arms around his neck while he swung me up in his arms and spun me in a circle. But when I mentioned our ant he stopped and placed my feet on the ground as he pulled me closer to him. I stared up at his face, his eyes were closed. "What happened?" I asked panicking.
"Nothing yet, but she was hospitalized last night when she had a heart attack. The doctor thinks this is her last day" he answered hugging me to his chest. Tears spilled over and my eyes stayed wide. I couldn't speak. "I'm so sorry". He knew how close I had been to her and knew how much this hurt me.
"No" I cried refusing to face the truth. "No this isn't happening Las Angela's was suppose to be a place where I could escape from this all" I weaved and he lifted me up into his arms and held me, I'm not sure for how long, but my big brother would of held me there all day if it meant that the pain was slightly subsided.
"We should go say our goodbyes" he whispered into my ear. I nodded my head. And he placed me in the front seat of the car.
