Swinging a backpack full of things onto my back and tucking away my phone in rear pocket, I silently tiptoed my way to the front door.

Passing the from behind the couch that Sam sits on. I try my best not to be noticed. My eyes continue to lock on the top of Sam's head where his lose hair peeks out.

Turning away, thinking that I am in the clear. I am startled by Sam silhouette figure blocking from the door. I yelp.

"Wow! Jeez, Sam. You scared me." I said innocently.

"Going somewhere?" Sam raises an eyebrow.

Trying to change the subject, I can't help but peer over the couch wear a realistic manikin version of Sam sits. Forgot he made that last summer to catch me from leaving the house when I wasn't supposed to.

"Manikin. Really?" I say with a attitude like no other.

"Besides the point Tyler. You were leaving!" Sam yells.

I stood in silence, I had not yet figured out what I was going to say. If I told him about the house, he would accuse me of wanting to get arrested again. And he hates watching me and mom fight when she has to bail me out.

I just don't know what to say. Mom bounces around at jobs and she can't even afford me to go to college. I am forced to put in hard work this year and earn my way on my own to go to college. She just keeps making it harder when she gets low on money and I have to pay the bills on my own.

Sam just doesn't understand.

But I suppose getting in jail doesn't help my cause.

So I lie.

Looking at Sam with his hands crossed and his foot tapping on our old wooden floor. I immediately cook up a lie that could convince a 10-year-old.

"I am just going out to get groceries. Y'know, to make your favorite, bean and rice casserole." I remark with a sweet smile.

I just won't be at the house long. Just a few hours. And when I come back, I'll tell him my car broke down. Yeah, that's I go explanation. I'll walk straight out of this clean.

Searching Sam's face, I look for a positive answer. To my surprise, his face lights up.

"Oh yeah. Of course. You do that." He assures shuddering with his words.

Stepping out of my way, I take a stride forward to the door of freedom. Before I can squeeze and turn the doorknob. Sam speaks up.

"How long will you be?" He wonders

I am quick to react. One would say to quick.

"No more than 30 to 45 minutes."

Like who shops for one meal that long. But to my advantage, Sam was allergic peanuts, eggs, and gluten. So, he's a strict eater.

But I remember Sam has trouble counting so I glance at the time.

"I will be no later than 10:45. If I am, call me immediately."

Sam nods and takes in a gulp.

Twisting the knob and taking a step out into the warm summer night air. I whip my head around to wave Sam good bye.

"Remember lock the door. Only open it up for me or mom. If police come. Turn off the lights and act like no ones home. Promise?" I ask.

"Promise." He responds with a weary smile.

I smile back and shut the door. As I walk down the crackled concrete pathway to my car in the driveway. I hear Sam clicking and twisting locks that hold the door shut. Good.

As I reach for my car handle. It takes me a few tries to unlock it with my useless keys.

My car was old and rental. It had dinks and scratches all over. Due to my 3 person family's lack of money. I couldn't afford any repairs. As I slid into the drivers side seat with a stained and crumbed leather. I was unknown to who was laying in the back seat.

"Hi-ya Tyler!" A girl with a raspy voice spoke while poking out behind the passenger's seat.

"Jeez Dani. You scared me," I pause to watch her slide over the middle console and into the passenger seat, "did your stepdad kick you out again?"

"Was it that obvious?" She wonders with a fake smile.

I innocently nod and twist the keys into my car.

"Seriously. I don't get what my mom sees in that man." Dani complains.

I start the ignition and back out of the driveway. Turning the wheel at ten and two, Dani goes on and on about her personal problems. Usually I would listen in but now my only escape is slipping an ear bud in my left ear, where it is out of view of Dani's gaze.

In the corner of my eye, I notice Dani prop up her short legs on my dashboard. I could already see the dry mud on her boots shedding off.

Instantly  smacking them off, Dani shoots me a glare.

"Hey!" She whines.

"Last time I let you do that. There were size 5 boot prints plastered on my window."

Dani consequently rolls her eyes and turns to stare out the window.

I sigh.

"So who are we picking up?" I wonder trying to break the sudden awkward silence between us.

"Well... Kayla doesn't have a car and Jason's twin sister is using his..." she states.

"Okay. What about Dean, Brandon, and Samar?" I wonder.

"Dean is having his older brother drop him off after basketball practice and Samar and Brandon live close. So there walking."

Turning back to the road, I head for Jason's house.
