JAKE

I bolted up out of my head, frantically searching around me for the hideously loud noise that had woken me up. But when my head was cleared and I was completely shaken awake, I heard it again, and it was only the sound of someone knocking on my front door.

Quickly slipping on some shorts, I headed down the stair and to the door. I wondered who it could possibly be, here at such a late hour.

But opening the door at last, I knew I should have expected this.

"Hi," Dirk said, smirking as he looked me up and down.

"Um...hi?" I replied, blushing as I watched him admiring my short shorts. Maybe I should have put on actual pants...

"What-what are you doing here?" I asked, hoping he had a reason to visit. Not that I wouldn't mind it if he didn't, but....

"Well...I just finished studying for my midterms...and I thought maybe we could go out or something?" He asked, running his hand through his hair nervously.

"Right now? What time is it?"

"I don't know...late," Dirk said, looking behind him at the dark sky. "If you don't want to, I can-"

"No, no... Let's go, you need to celebrate anyway, right? Let me go put on some decent clothing-"

"Honey you look just fine in that," Dirk hummed, and I don't think I had ever blushed more in my life.

"S-shoes?" I asked, unable to control his dumb stuttering.

"Shoes." He said, stepping in and getting comfortable, sitting on the couch as he waited. I quickly ran upstairs to put on shoes and check my hair. Then I noticed an embarrassing amount of dried up drool on the corners of my mouth. Had that been there the whole time? WHY. JUST- WHY.

After washing my face and mentally punching myself in the face, I ran back down to see Dirk, in the same place I left him.

"So...parents aren't home?"

"They went on a date night. I wouldn't expect them home until much later," I replied, and we stepped out of the house and into his car. It was a lousy single mom car...which might not be far from the truth, as far as I knew.

"Where are we going then, mate?" I asked, hoping to make our awkward car ride a little less awkward.

"It's the goldmine of fancy dinners," He replied, and next thing I knew we were pulling into a Wendy's.

I didn't want to say anything, so we went in and ordered our food. I hadn't had fast food in a long time, but the fact that I got to experience it again with Dirk himself, made it a million times better.

When we got to eating our food, finally Dirk had more to say.

"Yeah I uh...brought you here so you won't be so uncomfortable. You said you didn't want people to know about us, and sitting together at a fancy candle-lit dinner wouldn't exactly help that..." I stopped mid-bite into my burger and looked at him with wide eyes. I thought this had something to do with his financial situation and all, but apparently he cared more than he put off.

"Well-" I swallowed. "Thanks for that, Dirk. Really, mate..." But Dirk wasn't finished. He put down his food and rested his head on his hands, looking intently at me as I quite unattractively ate my food.

"You know...you're pulling a John. Like seriously," He said, narrowing his eyes as if I was some zoo animal.

"A John?" I asked.

"A John. You see, John, the idiot, could make out with Dave for hours, and like it. Then when someone brings up the word gay, he's running for the hills. Get it?" I swallowed another mouthful and decided I was done. I didn't quite like where this conversation was going. And I guess it was obvious to him, too.

"All I'm saying is, you don't need to deny it. It's not a bad thing. I understand it can be freaky, being so different from the majority of people, but I guarantee you most people don't even care," He said, and saw I was unsatisfied with his answer.

"Watch," He said, getting up from our booth and striding over to the counter, where a curly red-haired teen was anxiously checking orders.

"Hey. I'm gay," Dirk said, and the red-head, eyes wide, shook his head alarmingly.

"Sorry, I um- I have a, like, girlfriend," He replied frantically, before Dirk shrugged and walked back.

"He has a girlfriend," Dirk said, and I couldn't help but chuckle.

"You're crazy, mate,"

"But I have a point. I just want you to know if you still don't want people knowing...I'll respect that."

And before I knew it, our late night date was over. Being dropped off at home and lying in bed pensively, I couldn't help but think about our conversations.

Sure, I actually got to know him, like how he basically was a single mom and he did online schooling and all, but I also got to know how much he cared. Which was crazy considered we had just met a few days ago. It was one of those meant-to-be kind of things, I guess.

But I knew he was taking his exams the next afternoon, and I promised myself to show him that I cared too.
