Take what you do seriously. Don't sign up for things that you aren't going to be loyal to. Does it really make sense to pay to be in a sport and then skip practice, fail your classes, and be a poor sport? no. It makes people talk about you. Not in a good way. "but at least I get all this attention" you say? Well it's not the right kind of attention. Stick to your word. Just do what you say you're going to do.
Bonus: Act the way you want people to see you. Don't act like you're around your friends. Act like you're around your grandmother(assuming you act respectful around her). Be the way you want to be seen.
