*Lyra danced as she made her way to the middle of the gym. All of their eyes shifted to her direction as she tentatively swayed her hips. She didn't care what she looked like, she just wanted to express herself for one night and let all of her pain slip away.
She didn't give a damn to the naysayers whispering in the benches. She was a frail she wolf with braces. Acne was littered throughout the span of her face. When the light would hit her acnes at an exact angle, it would light up making her face look like a Christmas tree.
But tonight was special, she promised herself she would enjoy this and savor the moment.
It was the middle of November and the Northeastern Pack was celebrating The Winter Harvest festival. All of the pack members gathered annually to celebrate this occasion and rejoice for the bountiful harvest the moon had given to them.
Lyra saunters towards Ignacios. The alpha's firstborn. She called her best friend's name to get his attention.
"Ignacios!" She happily chirped beside him. He turned around and gave her a toothy grin exposing his signature dimple on the left side of his lower lip. She felt her heart skip. She knew she felt something for Ignacios but she was too afraid to admit it. After all, he's the next Alpha and he needed a strong Luna. Whoever she is one lucky gal.
"Lyra! I'm nervous. What if she rejects me." Ignacios said. She fished a handkerchief from her back pocket and wiped the sweat off his forehead and cheeks.
Lyra gave him a smile. "Reject you?! I'm afraid my mate's gonna reject me! You know no one can resist you! You're the next dang Alpha! Whoever she is, she'll accept you. And she'll be one lucky she wolf." She said hugging Ignacios' shoulders.
"Thanks. I just hope when you see your mate he'll take you for what you are and disregard what your parents had done." Lyra smiled bittersweetly as if she's taken a bite from a bitter gourd. Her parents have been the main source of her misery. She was only a pup when it happened.
Her parents fell ill to a brain consuming sickness and rendered their way of thinking. They had done the most unimaginable thing and that was killing the Luna. The whole pack had grieved for the loss of there Luna. Not long after Luna's death, the Alpha came next. He couldn't handle the pain of losing his mate. He clawed his throat out using his bare hands.
Since that day, the Beta had been declared as Alpha and his mate the Luna. Since the Luna was barren she couldn't have a pup. So Ignacios remained the true heir for the position.
Lyra was glad that Ignacios did not harbor any hatred towards her. Instead, Ignacios reassured her that it was not her fault and that she was not supposed to suffer for the great deed her parents had done.
"Yeah, hey um listen. . . if anything happens between us. . . you won't let me go right?" She asked.
Ignacios was silent for a few seconds and placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "You know I care deeply for you Lyra, I will never let you go even if you and I would start world war three." He pressed his body against her into a friendly hug and placed a kiss on top of her head.
"Ignacios, before we find our mates I just wanted to say that. . ."
"Ladies and Gentlemen and small children, we are gathered here this night to witness a very special ceremony in which all of the unmated pack members will bask in the Moon's light. As you may all know, the Moon's light will be your guide in finding your mate. Make sure when you see them, claim them immediately." The Alpha announced rather excitedly.
Ignacios let go and excitedly clapped his hands along with the other pack members. Lyra could not hide it anymore. She knew about the budding relationship that Ignacios and this other girl, Lois. Ignacios would smell like her at almost all the time. But she dared not to say a word about it.
"Isn't this great Lyra? We're finally going to meet our mates! I just hope it would be. um never mind." He hopes it was Lois. Pain suddenly enveloped Lyra. She was jealous and it was mixing in with her scent.
"At the middle of the night where the Moon is closest to earth. The ceremony will begin!" Said Alpha Larry Stylinson.
Time passed and everything happened too quickly. All of the unmated wolves began to howl at the moon. The Moon shone brightly, giving the wolves energy to claim their mates.
The roof of the gym slowly opened and the light of the moon slowly invades every crack and crevice of the gym. It soon became silent and all of the unmated wolves stared at each other. Then slowly they came closer to each other and embtheirthere new found mates.
But Lyra was left out. She searched for the crowd but her mate was nowhere to be seen. Her breathing hitched and her palms started to sweat. She started to shake fearing for the worst.
Lyra felt a pair of eyes drilling through the back of her head. She turned around and saw that it was her best friend, Ignacios.
"Ignacios," her voice was a whisper.
Ignacios made his way to Lyra and grabbed her shoulders. "But you can't be mine! The moon has played a treacherous trick upon us! Lois is my mate!" Ignacios screamed. Everyone's head snapped to there direction. Lyra was speechless. Is This Ignacios? Lyra asks herself. She shook as she stared into his deep grey stormy eyes. In his eyes, there was nothing but disgust and hatred. Lyra felt a tear ran down her cheeks as Ignacios' grip tightened.
"Ignacios please, you're hurting me." She shuddered and pleaded for her freedom. Ignacios lets down his hands and stared at Lyra.
"Lyra, you will not be mine. I've already chosen Lois to be the Luna. You're weak." Ignacios said without even shaking. "Run Lyra, run."
Rejection.
Lyra was now a fountain of tears. She could not help it any longer. A painful howl ripped through her. She shifted and ran to the woods, letting her wolf steer the wheels.
