"That's never going to happen." I laughed while calling my best friend, Noah, out.
We were in this field with long grass and we sat on top of this abandoned car.
"It's true. I've done my research." He said trying to convince me.
"Noah look I know we live right on the spine of the San Andres fault but an earthquake big enough to take out all of California hasn't happen in years."
"Aubrey look at this." He said taking out his nerdy earthquake laptop and setting it on his lap. "The plates of California are constantly rubbing together, but look at the waves they're higher then they usually are. We always have a huge earthquake that effects anything and everything here in California. It happens about every 150 years or so... it's been exactly 150 years since the last one. Now it's only a matter of when it hits."
I laughed but when I turned to look at Noah, nothing but seriousness was plastered across his face.
"Wait your serious?" I asked thinking this was a joke.
"I've never been more serious in my life."
I cleared throat braking eye contact.
"I want ice cream. Let's go get some." I said changing the subject.
I grabbed Noah's hand and pulled him up off the car. We ran out of the field and into town. We walked inside the ice cream shop.
"Your buying loser." I said walking over to the window.
Noah rolled his eyes and scoffed.
As we were ordering a group of girls came in. One of the girls was Alley Green. Noah kinda has a huge crush on the girl.
"Oh God look at her. Her beautiful long hair. Her amazing smile. Her dreamy eyes. Her hypnotizing voice." Noah said practically drooling.
"Alright Noah we get it you love the girl. Now pay for my ice cream!" I said hitting his arm
He payed for our ice cream and we sat down. As we were sitting Noah took out his nerdy laptop thingy. It was beeping and he opened it to check what was wrong.
A look of fear swept over his face. He stared clicking buttons left and right.
"Noah... Noah what's going on?" I began to panic.
At that moment the ground began to shake.
"EARTHQUAKE!" Someone screamed.
Everyone started to panic and got underneath the tables. Things were falling off the shelves, pieces of the roof were breaking apart. The quake lasted about 3 minutes. Then the shaking stopped.
"Aubrey?" Noah called out checking if I was okay.
"Yeah I'm fine." I said groaning as I tried to get up.
Noah got up and went to his laptop and turned it to me.
"Aubrey... that was a 3.2..." he said with pure fear in his voice.
I looked at him and he nodded. At that moment I knew what was coming.
