"You dismissed the thoughts, hoping Papyrus and Grillby wouldn't freak out, you couldn't have been more wrong."

You folded up your old laundry and put it in a small basket that sat beside the bathroom door. Nervously glaring at the brass door knob that would lead you to the others, you contemplated if you should even go out.

The change in your appearance was juristic. They'd probably treat you different, everyone you ran across now would- for better or for worse.

You allow the anxious thoughts to gather in the back of your mind before pushing forward anyway. It was now or never and you had no time to waste.

Squeaking open the door, you made your way back to your cell. There's an unexpected guest lightly snoozing on your bed. The sight made you curious as Grillby never had his guard down like this before.

His flames were dim and even without an expression you could tell he was exhausted. This was a rare, yet well deserved break for him.

As quietly as possible, you climb down onto your bed beside him, his warmth immediately wrapping around you. Just as you're about to settle, you feel him shift beside you and realize you woke him up despite your efforts of trying not to.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you..."

"Is that you Y/N? What's wrong with your chest?"

Your cheeks flushed a foreign shade of red at the question. What were you supposed to say in the scenario?

"It's- It's nothing, alright? Scoot over."

Doing your best to dispose of your flustered composer and avoid Grillby's question, you sit beside him and curl up into a small ball with your knees pressed to chest and your head lying on top of them.

Luckily, he was swift enough to take your hint about the change and let you slide into the bed beside him.

"I'm very sorry. I assumed he would've known you were a girl. How did you end up like this anyway?"

You chuckle, honestly not sure how you had gotten in this situation either. You should've been dead ages ago.

"Ironically, I actually had a run in with Sans in your bar. I was just scavenging for supplies and he found me in your basement. I escaped from him but only for a little bit. He caught up to me and then blasted me with some kind of magic." You stick out your arm to show him all the burn scars, then tuck it back into your lap. "That's when I ended up here. Papyrus saw what happened and decided to save me."

A silence sits over the both of you. Grillby not knowing what to say and you not having anything left to tell. You contemplated about asking him what to do about Sans, but instead he decides to strike up another topic.

"Why didn't you come to me?"

An interesting question. Honestly, you didn't have a clear cut answer either.

You had met Grillby when you were a child. it was strange since no other monster had ever made it to the surface, but somehow, he found a way. On those nights your father would beat you, you took Ivan out to a small forested area behind your house. That's when you met him. A dimly lit flame with the body structure of a man in a bar tender get up. At first, you thought he was like an angel, always there for you after you had been hurt in one way or another. But as you saw him more, and did your research, it was pretty obvious to tell what he actually was. But it didn't bother you.

As far as you were concerned, Grillby was your best friend. A place you could go to for comfort and wisdom.

He disappeared not long before the other monsters found their way to the surface too.

You assumed he had abandon you and joined the other monsters in attacking the human population, or maybe he really had just vanished from your side.

However, he was here now. And you didn't plan on him leave any time soon.

"Y/N?"

"Oh, sorry. About your question, I guess I had thought you just abandoned me, or vanished from our world entirely. I don't think I expected you to be so close either. But I'm glad you're back, I missed you."

Grillby looks away from you for a second, his flames burn a little bit brighter, then dim back down. You had never seen him do such a thing, it was kind of cute.

"I won't leave your side, so you can come to me... If anything is troubling you."

His sincere expression let's you know how genuine the words he said were. Grillby had always been the good big brother type. Perhaps you really could ask him what to do about Sans. No one else seemed to know him as well. He had a filter around Papyrus and wouldn't open up to anyone else.

He did open up to you about that child though...

"Can I ask you something?" You contemplate it, but know this is what you need to do in order to make things right again.

"Sure."

"What can I do... to redeem myself to Sans?"

He's taken aback by the question, but tries to think about a solution nonetheless. It takes him a few minutes, but then he has a sudden break through.

"I think you should go to his special place. Surprise him."

"His 'special place'?"

He nods and pulls you closer to him to whisper to you.

"It's on the far side of the mountain. There's a small cave filled with glowing, blue flowers. They're called Echo Flowers, he brought them up and planted them from the Underground. Just whatever you do, be careful when you go in there. They can repeat anything they hear."
