In this story, The Hunger Games is very different from the books written by Suzanne Collins. Instead of death, the tributes are aiming to defeat their opponents. However, it is likely that many tributes WILL lose their lives during the game, if not intentional, then to protect someone else.
The main reason tributes take the games seriously is because if they lose, the person they care about most will be forced to be a tribute the next year.
Another difference is that the tributes don't need to be a boy and a girl. It all depends on who the losing tribute cares most about is.
