Chapter 3

(Avril Lavigne, Naked)

The music is drumming in my ears. For some reason, Haley decided it would be a good idea to sneak into a night club and for some reason, I agreed. When the band begins playing a song that I swear is only screaming I decide to ditch her. Walking down the boardwalk, I text Josh.

Sent: Whts going on?

Received: nothing.

I start typing a reply when he calls me. "Where are you?" I glance at the closest store next to me which is a T-shirt shop.

"Spray to say." Whoever came up with that name is a genius, I think as I roll my eyes.

"Good. I'm at the street. Come to my car.", he says then hangs up. Okay? Passing through a small sidewalk, I see his black car waiting for me. Josh rolls down the window, revealing his sparkling brown eyes. "C'mon, get in." I nod and do as he says. I don't ask where we are going, just stare straight ahead. We pull up to a large house that I guess he's renting while he's here. He opens the door and escorts me into the large condo. Everything is perfectly polished and neat. "So", he says, heading to the dinning room, not even checking if I'm following, "where's your parents? They let you move so soon?"

"Um...my parents...I lived with my aunt...my mom died when I was eleven. My dad? He's been in prison for...all of my life." I choke at the end of my words. I don't talk about my parents a lot. Strangely, I feel comfortable revealing these things to Josh.

"Sorry, I wouldn't have asked if I'd had-"

I cut him off, "No! I don't care. I barely knew them and I am so tired of getting peoples' pity." His eyes shift down to his hands. Looking as if he wants to say something, he opens the refrigerator.

"See, getting pity from someone shows that they care about you.",he says handing me a can of Mountain Dew. I never thought of it like that, people caring by giving me pity.

"Does that mean you care about me?", I know I shouldn't be joking but I can't help it.

"Ha. Well, to a degree, I must.", he pauses for a moment then continues, "Vanity is something you wear well."

I raise my brow,"Vanity: excessive pride in one's achievements. Something I lack."

"I see you're a nerd.", he jokes, flipping my hair,"You have a pocket dictionary don't ya?"

"Yeah, it's called my phone.", I give him a smug look and he laughs. His laugh is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. Somehow, it has a boyish quality that fits him so well. Without thinking, I lean forward and kiss him.
