Envy

Chapter Six

Aubrey -

I was silent the whole ride to the restaurant and I knew Zoe was probably wondering why. She had tried to start plenty conversations; however, my mind kept drifting back to what Lyla said and I decided that it needed to be addressed because I'd be damned if I was going to get played... again.

"So I guess I'm not the only woman you would like to know better." I said, as I looked over at Zoe.

"What's that supposed to mean?" she asked, sounding confused.

"It means what I said. You know what? Forget it," I laughed to myself, "I don't know why I'm so damn stupid."

"Baby girl," Zoe started, as she parked into the parking lot of the restaurant, "I have no clue as to what or who you're talking about. The only woman I wanted to take out tonight is you. The only woman I've asked in about two weeks to go out with me is you."

"Tell me anything." I said, under my breath, as I got out of the car. I didn't want to ruin what could have been a perfectly fine date; however, a part of me wanted to call a taxi and take my ass home.. but something told me not to, so I proceeded to go inside of the restaurant with Zoe trailing right behind me. I know she was probably thinking, "this girl is trippin'" but she really doesn''t know the sh*t I been through with women especially my ex, Justine.

"Hello," the woman at the booth said, "Table for two?"

"Maybe three." I said, looking at Zoe.

"Huh?" the woman asked, confused.

"Nothing," Zoe interveined, "table for two."

The woman nodded, slightly smiled and proceeded to take us to our table where she placed two menus. I made sure to sit across from Zoe rather than beside her.

"As you ladies may know," the woman said, "I am your hostess and I am Katie. Tonight is our poetry slam and it will begin in about an hour. Can I get you ladies anything to drink? Or would you like for me to return in a few minutes?"

"I'll just have a water, please," I smiled at Katie, "thank you." I didn't look up at Zoe at all but I could feel her staring at me.

"I'll take a water as well." I heard her say.

Katie nodded as she wrote down our drinks then said before walking away, "Sounds good. I'll come back with you guys' drinks and if you're ready to order, just let me know."

As soon as she walked away, Zoe asked, "What's going on, Aubrey? I wanted to have a wonderful time with you here tonight but you're making it hard. Tell me, baby girl. What's on your mind?"

I finally looked up at her and asked, "You asked Lyla out to lunch?"

"Who? What? Lyla? No, I did not. That's supposed to be your friend, right? Why would I do something like that, Aubrey?" she asked, and it made me think. Zoe didn't seem like the type of woman who would try to play another woman but then again, I didn't put anything past anyone.

"I don't know. She just told me before I left that you asked her out to l-" I began but Zoe quickly cut me off.

"I never asked her out to anything. Lunch. Dinner. Breakfast," she laughed to herself, "I don't want her. I don't want to get to know her. I'm here with you and I want to get to know you so relax. Forget about whatever she told you."

"Yeah, alright." I said as I looked back down at the menu, letting it go for now. It looked as if Zoe was going to say something but Katie came back with the drinks and asked us for our order. When we were done ordering our food, I tried to look everywhere but Zoe which was hard considering how good she looked; however, once again, I could feel her eyes on me.
