There once was a girl named Iona, and everyday she played in the forest with her best friend Alex. But one day, Alex was busy so they agreed to sneak out at night and play in the forest then. Oh what a horrid decision. Little did the children know, The Shadows came out at night and murdered children like them. They normally searched for twelve year old children, or around that age group. Alex, he was sixteen, and Iona, she happened to be exactly twelve.
The two snuck out at 12, bringing nothing with them. The wind was howling, the leaves crackled and crunched under their feet. Once they got in, they knew there was no turning back. Being childish, they started with a game of tag. Alex was it, and Iona was running for her life. The leaves crunched beneath her feet, and the branches from the trees pricked her several times in the face. Iona ran, as fast as she could. She ran like there was no tomorrow. She began to run out of breath, so Iona hid under a large branch.
Alex ran after her, but he soon lost the girl. “Where in the world did you go.” He muttered. The wind blew leaves along, and a dark fog was created behind him. As creeped out as he was, Alex walked at a slow pace, munching on an old carrot from his pocket. “Pretty good for a nine week old carrot.”
“Pretty, pretty good.”
Alex turned around, startled. “Who's there?” He picked up his half eaten carrot as a sword, but all Alex saw was a crowd of black fog.
“Something seems fishy.” He turned back and continued to casually walk along.
“Are you a brave pretty boy?” A crackling voice came from behind him.
“Nice try Iona, now shut up.” Alex kept walking along the path, finishing the carrot.
“Iona? Who is Iona?” The fog started to look like a creature.
“Iona shut up or I'll chase you with this old carrot.”
The figure cackled. “A pretty stupid boy at that.”
Alex turned around. “IONA! Just freaking reveal yourself, I know it's you.”
The Figure turned less translucent and more in a human shape. The rest of the fog did the same.
“Happy pretty boy?” The figures had a evil smiles.
Alex stood there, stunned.
“We are The Shadows.” They all chorused.
“I, uh um gotta...” The teen was cut off by screaming from a distance.
“IONA!” Alex shook. “Iona,” Before he could say another word, Alex collapsed. A dark red liquid started pouring out of his mouth. Blood.
“Should we keep him alive?” One asked.
“No, he's too old for our liking.” Another one stated.
The Shadows began singing. Yes, singing.
“Come to us, make no fuss. Death is near, and all you'll hear is: Come to us, come with us tonight. We see your fright, but you shall become like us tonight.”
One Shadow nudged another. “In this case the boy won't become like us. He'll just die.”
The Shadows nodded. “True.” They all cackled.
“BRING FORTH THY IONA!” The leader of the group screeched.
A group of Shadows were griping Iona by her arms.
“W-WHAT. A-Alex....” Iona's eyes watered.
“Don't worry dear child. He's in a um..” One Shadow mumbled to another: “What do human parents tell their children when someone dies?”
“That they're in a better place now.”
“Okay got it.”
He turned to trembling Iona. “A better place now.”
The Shadow motioned for the other Shadows to start their song. And they sung the song.
At the end of the song, Iona fell down to her knees. “Why.” It wasn't a question, it sounded more like a statement.
She began choking as her right eye turned white. “You will never make me like one of you.”
Her left eye began to turn white as well, but, as ironic as it is, Iona snatched one of the Shadow's daggers and stabbed herself in the eye.
Her left eye didn't bleed, not at all, it just turned red. She wasn't completely a shadow. She was half Shadow, half Demon.
The Shadows took the poor girl and turned her into one of her own, somewhat. And this is just the beginning.
