My alarm blared in my ears as my eyes fluttered open. I reached over slamming my fist on the alarm clock instantly turning it off. I sat up in my bed running my hands through my hair a couple times as I sat up. I wiped the tiredness from my eyes and swung my feet over the bed. Every muscle in my body ached and I hissed in pain when I stretched. My feet touched the cold ground as I got up taking small strides to my window gazing at the mountains. From my window you could see the mountains in the distance and got a beautiful view of the sunrise and sunset. I watched as the sky slowly faded to different shades of pink and orange giving off a calming sense. Pine trees were littered across the mountains and I could see snow on the tops of some. I felt the fabric of my shirt slide of my shoulder sending tingles of pain across it. My whole right shoulder was covered in a black blue and purple bruise which throbbed as I moved. I walked to my closet and pulled out a pair of sweatpants and my moms light blue t-shirt. Most of the clothes I own were hers and I don't mind at all. Sometimes I feel like I can smell the lavender on her shirts still. I crept over to my door and opened it slightly listening for any noise throughout the house. I walked out of my room and hopped across the floorboards. After a while I had memorized the parts of the floor that don't groan under my weight. I reached the stairs and tiptoed towards the bottom watching my footing. I heard the slam of a door from upstairs making me jump and slip and tumble down at least twelve wooden stairs. My head was pounding when I reached the bottom every bruise and cut on my body was now split open and throbbing. My face scrunched up in pain when I tried to sit up a sharp pain exploding in my ribs. I slowly got up whincing at the pain in my now twisted ankle. I thought of every curse I could thing of to myself and limped to the bathroom. I swallowed a couple painkillers in my mouth with tap water and wrapped bandages over the more serious cuts and my ribs. There were new bruises forming all over my legs and one right on the top of my left shoulder. I sighed and threw my hair into a ponytail. My eyes widened at the forming bruise on my jawline. I ran out of concealer yesterday and I have no time to get any before school. I huffed in frustration and took out my ponytail running my hands through my hair. I walked out of the bathroom and stopped in my tracks to see my red faced angry and very drunk father stomping towards me. It's worse when he's drunk I thought to myself and I shivered my back flush against the bathroom door. He came up in my face the smell of alcohol filling my nostrils. He grabbed my chin roughly examining the bruise " do something about this" He growled walking away. I stood there shocked for a moment that he left me alone. But I wasn't complaining. I quickly grabbed my backpack and slid on my shoes walking out the door. My body relaxed as I walked into the crisp morning air taking a deep breath and smiling slightly. I took long strides trying to get to school early enough to miss the cheerleaders and jocks. I don't know why but I guess they get a kick out of kicking me if you know what I mean. I was about a block away from school when I saw a small cat crossing the road. It was so tiny with dark brown fur and several white spots on its back. Suddenly a car turned the corner quickly speeding towards the cat. In no time I dropped my bag and sprinted into the road swiftly picking the small animal into my arms running to the other side. I stumbled as the car sped by with an angry driver yelling at me to watch where I was going and such. I tucked my arms into my chest as I fell onto the sidewalk my body flaring up in pain. I had turned my body so I fell on my back so I wouldn't crush the cat. I opened my arms to see the poor animal shaking in fear. I sat up and lightly scratched behind the cats ear. It Purred lightly and nuzzled it's head into my neck and I was sure my heart turned to mush. I checked for a collar and sure enough there was a small golden tag on the cats neck with the name brownie on the front and an address engraved on the back. I finally looked around to see that there was nobody to witness the event that took place. I shrugged to myself and noticed the address on the tag was close to here. I got up and crossed the street picking up my bag with one arm and the kitten in the other. It took me only around five minutes to reach the address. I reached the house analyzing it. It was blue and small but quaint and I smiled to myself. I walked up to to the door and rang the doorbell. "I got it!" I heard someone yell. Footsteps approached the door and the door was opened to reveal a boy about my age. " Can I help you?" He said and I slightly put my arms out to show him the kitten. His eyes flashed with realization and took a step forward. " oh you found brownie" he said taking the cat into his arms. "What's your name?" He said and I shifted awkwardly. My eyes widened and I quickly took out my notepad from my pocket with a pen and swiftly wrote down ~Lilah~ and showed him. His eyes quickly read it and he smiled. " It's nice to meet you Lilah I'm Jack." A small smile crossed my face and I gave a little wave. " if you don't mind me asking.. How come you don't speak." I flipped the page of my notebook and wrote ~I'm mute~ expecting him to laugh at me or call me a freak but instead he just said "oh" and smirked at me. He opened his mouth to say something when a woman called him from in the house. "I'm sorry I have to go but thanks for finding him" as he gives a gesture to the now sleeping kitten in his arms. "We'll I'll see ya around bye Lilah." He smiled and I gave him a small wave as he closed the door. I walked away from the house and back to the street I was on. It was about ten minutes later that I reached the school and shuffled my way to my locker. I glanced up to see miss Barbie and her goons waiting for me. My shoulders slumped and my face fell. So much for being early.....
