Sirens pierced through the air as the smoke arose from the field. The scent of gasoline and blood fill the air and I see people rushing on over, oblivious to what had just happened. Children were clenching onto their older siblings. Mothers broke down while their spouse stood there with head down, trying to hold back the tears. Policemen and paramedics arrive, looking for any survivors although knowing that most likely none had made it. Then I see it. I choke and feel blood and tears coming up my throat. I walk over to the figure and rest my head on it, tears taking over me until...

"Arrrroooooo" howls my 1 year-old Husky Mix, Sadie. I jump up and hit my head on my bed frame, feeling a bump appear in the middle of my head.

"Sadie!" I start to scold her for startling me until I remember the terrible nightmare I had just had a few moments ago.

"...Good job girl" I mumble and pat the empty spot on my bed, encouraging my puppy to get up on it with me. She joyfully accepts with a wag of her tail.

I walk down the stairs of my old house and let out a huge yawn. The scent of coffee hits my nose. I stumble towards the kitchen quickly when my brother spots me. He chuckles.

"You look excited for school" Ben says sarcastically. Ben is my 23 year-old brother and might I say, not too bad looking. His black curled hair always looks perfectly ruffled and his unshaven face matching with his darker skin looks quite attractive to girls his age. He's my legal guardian while my mom is away in the military. I never see her often, but when I do she always lights up whenever she sees how much taller I've gotten. Unfortunately, I have never met my father. he died in a train accident while my mom was 5 months pregnant with me. Ben always says he had the best sense of humor and was the kindest man you'd ever met. Damn, how I wish I had known him.

My name is Kourtney David. I'm your average 16 year-old skater girl in the city of Cedar City, Utah. I'm not too skinny, but not overweight either but I'm the shortest chick you'll ever meet. I have blue eyes that sparkle like the Pacific (or so I've heard) and hair that reaches the way down to my middle back. I don't even remember my natural hair color anymore. I've changed from blonde, to black, to blue, to purple and now I'm stuck with red. Oh well, I could look like those girls at school that look like a unicorn spit up on their hair.

"Yeah I guess so, to be honest, I just really want to head to the skate park with Jaki and Sam" I reply, grabbing a cup of freshly-made coffee and some toast. Jaki is so beautiful, you wouldn't even suspect she's a skater! She has curly, long blonde hair with black highlights and delicate baby blue eyes. Sam is like my brother I never even had. He looks a bit like a player: brown hair he brings into a quiff and his sparking brown eyes. Every girl at school has a crush on him and honestly? If I see one more love note in his locker again, I will scream.

"Well little lamb, better head upstairs and get yourself prettied up. I don't want to get you late and have to deal with Ms. Tate again" Ben says to me as I start making my way up the stairs. Silvia Tate is my Science teacher, and my brother's ex-girlfriend. He doesn't talk about their old relationship often and neither does she, but when I ask what had happened, Ben will always say something about "juggling for other guys". Weird.

I walk past Sadie Lady lying on the couch by the stairs and stop for a second to give her a good scratch. It's funny to talk about a dog in this way, but Sadie is like my go-to gal, or dog. I go to her whenever I need to talk about guy troubles or the slutty preps at school. She always pricks up her ears and to me, it seems like she's actually listening. Man's best friend? More like a girl's best friend!

I walk into my room and I instantly feel the warm sunlight hit my pale skin through my half-drawn blinds. I walk over to my drawers and pull out my matching red laced bra and underwear. I proceed to my closet and choose my black skinny jeans along with a tan colored sweater I found. I brush my hair out and put on my black snapback from the hook on my door. I grab my phone from the side of my bed and grab my white and black sneakers outside my door. I run up to the stairs and slide down the rail, making a perfect landing.

"There, now you don't look like a troll anymore" my brother says, grabbing some coffee from the coffee machine.

"Ha, right." I smile, "now where did you put my skateboard at, hmm?" I ask, eyeing him. He always tries to hide it without me noticing. I've never meet a man that was so obsessed with a skateboard like him.

"Will you ever give up that old piece of crap?!" he sighs, heading towards the pantry and coming back with my skateboard. It wasn't that torn up, you could still tell that it was the English Flag still it, and only 2 wheels had popped off this month!"

"Never in your wildest dreams!" I exclaim as I walked outside, hopping on my ride and heading on my way to school.

"Mountainview High School, here I come!"
