Waiting for you

Dear Alice,

When you read this, I will be already gone. I just really hope you understand. I can't do this anymore... I have to leave for a while.

But I promise you, I'll be back. I'll come back to you.

Will you be waiting for me?

Yours, Michael

"Michael!" I heard her say softly, quietly.

But I could still hear her, besides the rustling of leaves her feet made when she came nearer. Besides the hammering of my heart in my chest.

I had been longing for this voice for a whole year.

I turned around and faced her, looked into her deep blue eyes, streaked with silver and framed with thick black lashes.

How I had missed those eyes!

"You're back," she said, looking me over, taking me in.

"Yes," I replied.

"I've missed you." she admitted, suddenly shy and looked at her feet.

It melted my heart and I took a step towards her.

"I've missed you, too," I told her. "Every day."

She glanced up into my eyes and I could see how clouded hers were, not shining and brilliant like I remembered them.

"Then why did you leave?" Her voice was filled with unexpected anger. "Why did you leave me alone?" she accused. "You only left this stupid letter!"

She held up a crumpled paper in her fist. Her angry glare drilling into my eyes. She had kept it, she still had it!

"Alice," I said, "I had to leave, I couldn't stay here. Not with my mother dead and my father going after other women. It was... too much."

I could see the tears shimmering in her beautiful eyes.

"You could have said good-bye at least," she whispered and then she turned around, away from me.

"Alice," I said again, pleaded. I left her once, I wouldn't lose her again. "I'm sorry. I was so stupid. Can you forgive me?"

I took a few steps towards her, the autumn leaves rustling and crackling underneath my shoes.

"Don't." She warned and it sounded as if she was holding back tears. She wrapped her arms around herself, looking lost and broken.

I just wished I could take her in my arms and kiss her. I wanted to reach out and hold her, but she wouldn't let me.

"You know." I began. "while I was away, I wrote you a letter, every day. I wrote them, put them in an envelope and put a stamp on them. But I could never send them away. Not a single one.

I was afraid you wouldn't read them, that you would just throw them away."

I reached into my jacket, felt the weight in my pocket.

365 letters.

She opened the first one and unfolded the paper.

I knew what she would read. I knew them by heart, all 365 of them. It was like the words were engraved into my heart and branded into my soul.

Dear Alice,

It's been a day since I left, but I already miss you. Pathetic, I know. But I can't help it.

You've taken my heart, my mind and soul. Without you, I feel lost, incomplete.

You may hate me now, but I hope you'll forgive me one day.

Forever yours, Michael

She sighed at looked at me, tears in her eyes and I couldn't hold back anymore. I closed the distance between us with two steps and wrapped her in my arms.

She smelled of lavender and strawberry chapstick.

"I've waited for you." She said into my ear.

And finally, I felt like I was where I belonged.
