Chapter Six

We get to the restaurant right on time. My parents have impeccable timing, never a minute late to wherever we are going. It’s pretty weird actually, well, what I consider weird is probably completely insane to everyone else. But we get there and we actually have a really nice time. Emma is nice to me and acts normal around me, only because she isn’t with her friends. But we spend hours at our table. Laughing, talking, just generally having a really great time.

When we were half way through our desert, Mum, Dad and Emily all shared a look. I was looking down at my food but I saw it, out of the corner of my eye. I looked up a few seconds later to see three gifts, one from each of them. I gasped. We hardly ever get each other gifts, if we do its only one small one from the entire family. I feel my eyes watering up, why is everyone being so nice to me today.

“Happy Birthday!” they all say together.

“Thanks you guys, you didn’t have to.” I reply graciously.

“Nonsense! It’s your sixteenth birthday, a very special day.” Mum says, glazing over at Dad at the end of the sentence.

“Yeah!” Emily pipes up “We had to get you something! Open mine first! Open it! Open it!” she finishes, jumping up and down in her seat, pushing the gift into my face.

I laugh and take it from her hands.

“Thanks Em” I say with a smile, undoing the pink bow on the gift. Only Emily would put a pink bow on a gift for me, it is my least favourite colour, and her favourite. I gently unwrap the small box, to find a ‘little blue box’.  I open it up and find a bracelet. A charm bracelet, with lots of little charms, symbolising different events in our lives; An M and an E symbolising our names; An S and a J, symbolising our parents’ names; a small flower, symbolising our childhood fun; an Eiffel Tower, symbolising our trip to Paris visiting our Nana. A small cross, symbolising Nanas death. And finally a dog and a Dragon. The last two charms made no sense. I began to cry.

“Oh, Em, it’s beautiful.” I exclaim, reaching over to hug her.

“Hey, no problem sis’. Just make sure that whenever your wear it, we will all be with you, watching over you, even Nana. And know that we will always love you, no matter what. ” She replies, returning the hug. When she pulls away I see tears in her eyes.

“Thanks sis’. This means the world to me.” I say, slipping the bracelet onto my wrist.

I look next to my parents. I see that their presents are already waiting in front of me. I open Dads first. A Swiss Army Knife. I give Dad a puzzled look; he just laughs and says ‘You never know.’ I laugh along with him, give him a hug and thank him. Then I look to Mums small boxed gift. I take it into my hand delicately. Slowly I wrap it; again it is another ‘little blue box’, only this one is old and worn. I remove the lid to reveal a beautiful ring. It had four different coloured stones, white, red, blue and yellow. I gasp and gape at the ring; it is so pristine and beautiful.

“It was your Grandmothers, your Nana’s; she wanted you to have it.” She said, her eyes glassing over. This happened whenever she spoke about her mother. Ten minutes later we were out to door and back in the car headed home. I was snuggled in the back seat with Emily I had gotten chilly and just as we got to the car, it started raining, very heavily. As we pulled out of the parking lot, it raged into a full on storm, Making it even more difficult to see, since it was almost ten o’clock. With the wipers going at full speed, the dulled thud of the rain and soft music playing, I found myself drifting to sleep…

… I woke almost ten minutes later to feel the car jolt to the side, and then flip high in the air. I shot up; looking at Emily’s terrified face. I reached for her, clutching at her like a lifeline. Just as we were about to hit the ground, I whispered ‘I love you’ into my sister’s ear. Then we hit the ground and the last thing I heard was the sound of my mother screaming before I fell into darkness.
