I remember that night more than any other night I had. A lot of people say you will remember bad things more than good. I remember hanging out with our babysitter who at the time I had a little crush on. She was trying to teach me how to play "crazy eights" and I actually liked the game. But then we our phone rang and she went to go answer it. She looked dismayed and sad.
About 2 hours later two men came and got us. I remember asking questions like, "who are you?" Or "where my mom and dad?" I was then in a room and my grandma came in she looked worried but when she saw me she thank God that I am ok. Then a lady came in wearing an black dress suit like with wavy long hair looking like a spy of the government. My grandma was worried of what was going on and asked, "What happened where is Paul and Shari?
She then sat down and replied, "I think you should sit down Mrs. Gold."
"I'm not sitting down anywhere until you tell me what happened to my son and his wife!" She loudly replied.
The lady looked at my grandma and then me. "I'm sorry to tell you this Mrs. Gold but your son got into an accident and it was fatal. Now Jackson is with CPS and Parker will be going with Jackson to a Foster Care Center until further notice."
"No.... No. This.... Are you sure, maybe it was someone else no please! My son is gone?..." As she started to cry my grandma sat down finally and just cried harder each time she took an air of breath.
Looking with grief and sorrow as well the lady put her hand over my grandmas and said calmly, "I know this is hard but... We are here for you."
My grandma wipes her eyes. "What is going to happen to my grandchildren? After CPS sees them and after they go to the Foster Care Center? Can I take them?"
The lady looks down then looks at us with sadness. "I'm sorry. By the laws of this state, you and your husband aren't fit to take on being a guardian to a 2 and 5 year old."
"What will happen to them then what about anyone else this is my family!" She started to cry again. "You can't take my grand babies away! You can't..."
The lady replied, "We won't be taken them away. You will still see them. Even when they find a home. Just right now we need what's best for Parker and Jackson."
My grandma noded and turned to me, "Parker I will see you this weekend. I promise. I love you, no matter where you go grandma loves you."
"I love you to grandma, I understand." I replied trying to hold back tears for her.
She then left and I went with the lady into a car and my baby brother was brought in too. From there we went to the Foster Care Center
We got there at night so all the kids were sleeping and they split me and Jackson up because he was 2 and I was 5. I had a roommate but I didn't know who it was or what he looked like that night because he was already sleeping. I was tired so I went into the bed and the lady tucked me in and said, "Don't worry Parker. You are safe here and you will be with your brother Jackson in the morning." And kissed my forehead before she left.
The next morning felt so unreal. I always thought to myself when will I see my mom and dad again. I was thinking in my bed about it a lot. But then a woman by the name of Olivia who had brunette hair and red lipstick with blue eyes came and woke me up for the day to introduce me to all the kids.
I asked Olivia, "can I eat?"
"Of course you can silly! But first meet the rest of the children." She said happily.
I went out of the room and glanced at the bed my roommate was in. He was already outside and playing. I followed Olivia out into the playroom and her and another lady who was holding Jackson happily said, "Okay guys, this is Jackson who is 2 years old and his big brother Parker who is 5. Let's make them feel welcomed and happy."
"Hey Jackson and Parker." They all said loudly.
There were maybe about 15 children at this place who all didn't have a family. I started talking to a lot of the kids since the lady's always were with Jackson and the other toddlers. It was nice to see I wasn't alone. I remember one girl who was named alli that was 7 who lost her dad in the war and never knew her mom. She had long blonde hair and dark brown eyes. another kid was 9 named Toby who lost both of his parents due to drugs.
"What are drugs?" I asked him.
"You will learn about it some day but stay away from them ok." He replied.
"What's happened to your family?" Another girl asked.
I looked down and felt warm in my stomach as well as burning pain in my throat. "My parents are gone. And.... Never coming back... They were in an accident I think the lady said."
"Aw" the two girls said.
"It will be ok we will be your family." Said one of the boys.
That's when I seen a kid maybe the same age as me hanging alone near the hot wheels and Lego toys were.
"Who's he?" I asked.
"Who Edgar? He doesn't talk much to anyone. I think he is your roommate." Toby replied.
"Really?" I said. "I wonder why."
Olivia rang a little triangle bell and called out, "Breakfast is ready guys! Come on and get breakfast!"
We all sat down and ate pancakes and all of a sudden you hear Jackson screaming that he doesn't want pancakes he wants mom and dad. He's too young to understand that they were never coming back. I felt bad. Especially for Olivia who got syrup all over her neck and shirt because of his temper tantrum.
