The time came where I had to go to another god forsaken AA meeting. I drove up to the community center like I had done everyday for the past month and a half and parked in the normal space I take, far from the other cars, and got out to see her standing in front of the building. She appeared to be on the phone with someone from what I could tell. She appeared to have a Bluetooth or something because her phone wasn't up to her ear yet she was talking. I slowly walked over and listened in on the conversation.
"Be quiet," She demanded. "You'll only be there for an hour till I get home. No point in whining when no one is there to feel bad for you." ..... "You will regret your poor choice of words once I get home..... You are correct to be afraid. To be very afraid."
She hung up the phone right as I made myself visible. The moment she saw me her eyes widened and she smiled the same smile that I had dreaded seeing.
I opened my mouth and stopped. Did I really want to follow threw with this or am I gonna regret what I'm doing.
"Hi." She blurted, interrupting my inner thoughts.
"Hello Bethany. How are you today?"
"Eh I could be better. How about yourself? Ready for another day of AA?"
"I can't say I'm ready but I don't think it matters much how I feel." I answered with a slight chuckle at the end.
She laughed for a second then regained her dreadful smile. "What made you come over and talk? You seem like the quiet type."
I was surprised by such an odd question. It seemed she already knew of my bad intentions. "You just seem like an approachable person. Someone around here that I can talk to without being bored out of my mind."
She blushed, she obviously never got this much positive attention and she didn't seem she new how to react. "I didn't think you liked me much. I don't know if you notice or not but sometimes I look at you from across the room and just kinda doze off. I figured you'd be a little scared to be around me by now."
It was as if we were connected telepathically and she was reading my mind. "Quite the opposite." I lied. "When I catch your stare I get a bit happy that someone in the class is just as bored as me." I checked my watch to see it was time for the session to start. "Maybe we can continue this conversation later. What do you say to lunch tomorrow at Panera? My treat."
Her eyes widened as if she had lived this moment before but just in her dreams. She snapped back into reality and let out a very small, "Yes."
"Splendid!" I exclaimed, trying to sound as believably excited as I could. I turned and walked into the community center. This time around I did more than just stare at the wall and wait for class to be over. I planned my day tomorrow with the most scary yet interesting person I had ever met.
