"What happened to her?" I slowly whispered.
"She was terribly abused, then left to die. My dad doesn't know if she can be helped," Natalie looked at me with a sad face and took my hand, "Let's go look at the other horses quick, then you can help me do the feedings," Natalie pulled me along to meet two other horses, a black horse named Mikey and a roan named Pepper, and a light brown pony named Fudge.
I followed her into the feed room with shelves full of medicene and supplements for the horses. Natalie grabbed eight feed buckets and put the correct amount of feed into each labled bucket. She handed me four and grabbed the rest for herself.
"Do you mind giving them their feed?" Natalie asked me.
"No, not at all," I replied, very glad to have my mind occupied. I looked at the first bucket that went to Jack, then Mickey, Icabob, and... Rose. I gave the first three their feed and they happily nickered and whinned to me.
Then I slowly walked to Rose's stall, "Hey girl," I said weakly, trying to sound a little confident. The white mare jumped to the back of her stall and heaved, sweating in some places, "It's ok girl, I won't hurt you," I whispered and stood in silence, as if nothing else was around me but the horse. Rose slowly put her head up, still tense with ears pinned against her head, and poked out her nose to sniff the air.
I lifted the bucket to the edge of the stall. I tipped it forward so that it would dump into the grain bin inside the stall. As the grain clunked into the bucked, Rose pushed herself even further into the corner and whinnied in distress. I quickly finished pouring, so that the poor mare could stop fretting over the noise.
"Oh, sorry Shiloh, I didn't mean to give you Rose's grain," Natalie jogged over to me from the other end of the barn,"But it looks like youv'e managed." Natalie gave a faint smile and nodded as she started heading towards the feed room again at a fast pace.
When I caught up to her in the feed room she took the buckets from me and stacked them in a pile on a shelf.
"Oh my gosh, it's almost five!" Natalie yelped, glancing at the clock, "Mom won't be too happy if we come in late, come on let's go."
We ran out of the barn, and once again I was shot with the stinging breeze of winter. The snow was coming down in what seemed to be tons. We tried to run through the snow but we ended up pushing thorugh it at a walk. Once we got to the house, Mrs. Williams had two steaming cups of hot chocolate sitting on the counter.
"I didn't know if you guys would find you way back," she teased, "Goodness, it's snowing quite hard out there."
"Did you get the feedings done?'' Nat's dad asked walking in from the living room," Smells great Jill, what is it?"
"Spagetti and meatballs," Mrs. Williams smiled, "Your favorite, Tom."
"Yum!" Natalie and Tom said at the same time. I laughed quietly to myself. This family seemed so happy together.
I don't know how I would get over the death of my parents. I had a family of three just like them. Mom making supper, dad coming home from work, sharing our crazy days at the dinner table.
"Do you like spagetti and meatballs?" I popped out of my little daydream when Tom asked me.
"Yes," I replied simply.
We all sat down at the round table as Jill put the bowl of spagetti sauce on the table.
"DIG IN!" Natalie yelled grabbing the noodles.
Mrs. Williams gave a sly cough and looked at Natalie, "Guest first?" she meant it as more of a statement then a question.
"Yes mother," Natalie grinned and rolled her eyes as she passed me the noodles.
