What is the meaning of color?
By dictionary definition, it is the property possessed by an object of producing different sensations on the eye as a result of the way the object reflects or emits light. However, I believe that color does not really have one specific meaning when it comes to how humans think. Everyone could think of it in completely different ways than each other. Color could be the way she laughs. It could be the way he smiles. It could be the way her eyes get when she is happy. It could be the way his hair falls perfectly even when he claims it is messed up. Color could be the way the television screen looks when your favorite show is on, or it could be the blue or brown or green of your sibling’s eyes.
Color can mean anything anyone makes it mean. Maybe to someone, color is the white of someone’s smile. Or maybe, it is the glow radiating off someone who is ecstatic or passionate about something. The way her body moves as she dances in that red or purple or blue dress. Or the way he looks all tough and everything until he is around that one person that makes them so soft. To someone, color could mean love. To another, color could mean life. No one has the same definition of color because that is almost impossible unless you take the dictionary meaning. Even if two people have very similar thoughts on what color means, inside their minds, they are completely different because everyone sees things differently.
To me, when I think of color, I think of a few things. I think of the brown of my best friend’s eyes, how they always look so warm and like home. I think about the digitalized smiles of my internet friends that I can only see through a simple screen until the day we finally are able to meet. When I think of color, I picture my favorite celebrities at what seemed to be their happiest moments. I think of the amount of happiness put into those smiles on their faces at that moment in time despite of anything that may have been happening to them. I think about that feeling I get when I, myself, am genuinely happy. When I can smile and the feel of it being so real that I could overcome the world if I really wanted to at that moment. I think about the warm embrace of my family and my friends when I have had a long day or just need a hug in general. Color makes me think about the lyrics of my favorite songs filling my ears when I am jamming out. It makes me think about that feeling I get when I finish a book, the one of complete satisfaction because of the fact that yet another thing is complete.
In my opinion, color can be anything. It can vary from how something actually looks to how something feels. No one can truly give the meaning of color and it be completely right because no one thinks the exact same as another person. So, tell me, what does color mean to you?
