Chapter one: Hanging on.
"Kirsten..." Lexie laughed, tossing her head back.
"Lexie..." I mocked, handing over our water bottle to her, so she didn't die of thirst.(Like she would!)
"Will you please please pretty please go on the Jack Rabbit with me? Please!" She whined, taking a swig from the bottle and plopping it down on the table.
"No.N-O. Nope. Not gonna happen." I said, tearing off a piece of Fried Dough and dropping it into my mouth.
"Fine. Be like that." Lexie huffed, rolling her charcoal ringed eyes at me.
She picked up her Twilight bag, threw it over her shoulder, and flounced off without a last glance at me,whom she left sitting there alone. I smiled to myself, and finished off the rest of the Fried Dough.Yum.I looked around the chaotic amusement, and gathered up our trash. I walked it over to the red trash can, and dropped it in, uncaring when a little piece of napkin fluttered out and away.
"Boo!" Nick said, his arms slinking out to tickle the ticklish place at the back of my neck.
"Ah!" I exclaimed, turning around quickly to face him, coming face to face with my gorgeous best friend.
He grinned at me, with an unmistakable, unforgettable grin that spread from one side of his face to another, revealing perfectly white teeth. "Hey,Kirsti."
"Hello, jerk." I blushed, looking down at my feet...I need to wash my sneakers.
"Uh? Jerk? That's a nice thing to call your best man!"
"Man?" I teased."Who said you were a man?"
He stuck out his tongue, but it was quickly placed back where it was supposed to be when Lexie approached.
"Hey,cutie." She cooed, positioning herself so she was standing beside Nick."I've missed you!"
"You too, Lex." Nick said, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her close to him.
My jaw hardened in jealousy, and I faked a smile towards Lexie."How was the roller coaster?"
"Great! You should of been there, Kirst." She said, smiling slyly at me.
"You didn't go on the coaster?" Nick asked me, quizzically.
I shrugged."No, I'm still not that into them."
"That sucks. I'm sure you and Lex would've had an amazing time."
"Yeah, probably. But hey, I'm gonna get out of here. See you later,Nick." I said, nodding in their direction and heading off towards the gates.
I heard Lexie distantly say bye, but I ignored her. I hate that girl. She's a typical 5'7",blond, blue eyed, spunky cheerleader. She's been with the entire football team, and now she's working on the basketball team. Nick. Nicholas Hall. My best buddy. She's gonna break his heart. He's in love with her, and doesn't suspect a thing, her dirty tricks. And all she cares about is being the most popular girl in Mexico High School. Her acts don't fool me, but I can't do anything about it. I don't wanna lose my best bud, my friend since Pre-K, my neighbor, the guy I think I'm in love with.
Love.
Isn't that the answer to everything? Shouldn't that be enough for me to be able to tell him the truth without regret?
No.
It's not.
I wish it was, God, I do wish it was so much, but it just isn't. Like, two plus two doesn't equal five, as much as you want it to, as much as you try.It just doesn't work.
"Hey! Watch out!" Some person on the sidewalk called to me as I walked down the middle of the street.
Some person was skateboarding. Right in my path.
"Shit..." I muttered, trying to get out of their path.
They missed me, but hopped off there skateboard and sauntered over to me anyways.
"I,uh,sorry." I said as the person tapped me on my shoulder.
"Don't worry about it." A voice,Female?,said to me, appearing in front of me."You looked a little bothered. You alright?"
"'Um,yeah. Just a little down, but yeah. Fine."
The person took down the hood of their hoodie, and took off their baseball hat, revealing a scarred face and shaggy amber brown hair."Oh, can I be of any help? And, I know, I'm a sight for sore eyes, but I'm Ally."
"Probably not,it's just...guy troubles. And no, you aren't 'a sight for sore eyes',Ally. You're beautiful, just not beautiful in the way everyone looks at it.Beautiful, like a lightening bug. It's just another bug during the day, but at night it shines brightly, so that everyone can see it. And I'm Kirsten."
"Thanks,Kirsten. That's cool that you look at it like that." She said, smiling at me a sad smile.
Just then, a crack of thunder was heard in the distance and raining started falling.
"Shit..." She mumbled under her breath.
"What?"
"I gotta get home before the weather gets too bad."
"Let me take you, I got a car." I offered, picking her skateboard off of the already soaked pavement.
"Thanks,Kirsten."She said, for the second time tonight.
We walked to my Toyota Camry in silence and I unlocked the doors. We sat down, me in the drivers seat, and her in the passengers seat, and I started the car.I turned on the radio to 93Q.
"Are you okay with this?" I asked her, glancing over at her as I put on my sunglasses.
"Totally. I love this station."
I nodded, and pulled out of the parking space.
"Where to?"
"Downtown 'Cuse." She replied, staring out the streaked window.
"Okay."
We drove in silence for about ten minutes, before she broke it."Hey,uh.Kirsten? Can I ask you a question?"
"Sure.Shoot."
"What were your guy problems, if you don't mind telling me?"
"Oh, um. I'm pining for my best friend, who has a girlfriend that's ten times better than me."
"Ah..." She said, deep in thought."Well, hang in there, Kirsten. If he chooses her over you, he's a complete idiot, but if you love him so much, I doubt he's that idiotic. So he'll choose you.Just give him some time, girl. He'll come to his senses some time."
I nodded,"Okay. Thanks, Ally. Do you have a boyfriend?"
"It's...complicated,let's just leave that at that, okay?"She said, quickly dismissing the subject.
I entered downtown Syracuse, and asked,"Where am I heading to?"
"South Salina Street." She muttered, barely audibly.
"Okay."
I found the sign that said that, and turned onto that street. Weird, it was all rundown and dirty.
"Turn here." Ally said, pointing to a ratty house with a banged up car parked in it."Shit. Todd is home."
"Who's Todd?" I asked, pulling into the driveway and putting the car into park.
"Uh, no one. But hey, call me? It's 827-9298,that's my cell. I'll see you around, Kirsten. Thanks for the ride. And hey, just hang in there."
I quickly scribbled down the number onto a scrap piece of paper, and watched as Ally got out of the car and went around to the trunk to get her skateboard.
"I'll do that," I promised."And it was my pleasure. See you, Ally."
I stared as she sauntered over to the door, and was met there by a buff-intimidating guy who grabbed her roughly by the arm, and pulled her inside. And then she was gone.
