Wings

Chapter 1

My feet are pounding on the ground. My arms are scratched and bloody from sprinting through the trees. I don't know how long I have been running or why, all I know is that I can't stop, I can't let them catch me. I turn around but they are nowhere in sight, I know they can't be far behind because they are fast, probably faster than me. I am running out of energy, I know I can't go on for much longer. I can feel them gaining on me, I glance behind me and regret it immediately, their sick, twisted smiles, and the cold, dark look in their eyes, crawl under my skin and make me feel exposed. They are evil in its purest form.

They are almost directly behind me and I know I cannot outrun them and I know for sure I cannot overpower them. I realize there is only one solution, and at this point it's the only thing to keep me alive. I unfurl my wings and try to get them pumping, but they haven't been used for weeks and I don't know if I can get to enough power to propel me away from them. I push them up and down rhythmically and finally, with all my effort I do one last big push and I'm in the air. My giant graceful wings being used once again, the setting sun makes my feathers appear almost orange. God, I miss this, the air rushing beneath my wings, the the feeling of weightlessness, it's amazing.

That's when I hear the guns. A bullet whizzes past my ear, where my head was just a second ago. I tuck in my wings and drop, the ground is rushing toward me, the wind whistles in my ear, at the very last minute I unfurl them and catch myself. I am painfully yanked upward by the sudden rush of air under my wings. I hover a few meters of the ground taking in my surroundings, I'm in a deserted piece of the woods, I now they can't reach my this far out but I know they won't stop there.
