Day 2:
I slowly opened my eyes confused. I sat up quickly as yesterday came back to my memory. I closed my eyes and took a breath hoping that when I open my eyes, this will all turn out to be a dream. Some sort of sick, messed up dream. But in reality, I knew it was all real. I felt so lost, broken. I knew we couldn’t survive here forever; it would only be a matter of time before we’re all gone. No, stop! I need to stop thinking like that. I need to focus on the positives. Umm… positive. Nope, nothing. We need to find some other type of civilization besides our town, since it’s probably nothing more than dust and memories.
I quickly glance around and notice everyone is asleep. It’s barely past sunrise, but we need all the time possible. We need to head towards people but, I don’t know which direction to go or which one we came from. Considering we’re in a circle, and I don’t function in the mornings, I have absolutely no clue on what to do. But they can’t know that. Panic is not what I need nor want to deal with in the morning or anytime, really. I know, shocking but, if you knew this bunch of kids like I do, you would understand.
Not wanting to waste any more time, I reluctantly stood up from the grass. I walked over to the group huddled up together and noticed how Tyler was sleeping protectively next to Misty. He may not be brave, but he would surely die for his sister if he had to. I quickly shook off the thought of death and woke everyone up, except for Misty. I, being the ‘stubborn’ one as everyone gladly puts it, was hoping everyone would agree to leave her here. But I knew better, so I didn’t bother trying.
Everyone groaned from being tired. No one bothered to say anything considering none of us cooperate at this time of day.
“Good morning” I dared to speak trying to sound cheerful to boost up their perkiness because, to be honest, this was kind of depressing. They all replied with an over exaggerated groan as if they all planned to do that. “Yea, yea, I know you guys don’t work well with mornings but we can’t waste a lot of time. We need to find out what direction to go to. Tyler, wake up Misty, will you? It won’t help us if she’s passed out.” I cut off the cheery voice knowing it won’t work.
“Fine” Tyler spat out as if that word were poison. He grumpily walked over to Misty. As soon as he shakes her shoulder, she sits up quickly in a panic and slaps him right across the face in defense then laughs once she realizes that she hit Tyler.
“Are you okay Tyler?” I asked covering my mouth trying to suppress my laughter. He just stayed sprawled across the grass face down in a starfish like shape which wasn’t helping with the not laughing situation because he looked as funny as ever.
“Peachy” he replied as he flipped over and stared ahead at the beautiful sunlit sky. “Geez you slap hard” he mumbled sitting up.
“What can I say? It’s a gift” Misty smiled cheekily. I rolled my eyes at her oh so annoying ego. I mean really, does she have to be so … jerky? I don’t know how else to describe it…
“Alright you two love birds” I smiled tauntingly at them knowing their reactions. They immediately looked at me in shock then stared at eachother before looking away making gagging noises. I chuckled at their reaction knowing in my mind they can’t even stand five minutes alone in a room together without someone getting seriously hurt. By someone, I mean Tyler. “Okay, so anyway, I made us all something to suit our skills.” I gestured towards the supplies I used last night. I grabbed each one and passed them out seeing everybody’s eyes light up from seeing our line of defense.
I flinched as I heard a low growl come from the woods making the presence of a cougar known not too far away. Every one freezes and snaps their heads towards where the growl came from. I gripped onto my bow and arrows tighter in alert. I looked towards Eric, Tyler, Jack and Kris and start explaining that we need to figure out where we are. I was so caught up in the plan that I hadn’t noticed Jack had started talking to Misty a couple feet out of my hearing range.
