*Freshman Year*
It's been months into my freshman year and my birthday was rapidly approaching.
Tomorrow as a matter of fact.
My days were a repetitive routine of sitting through classes, blocking off all the noises besides my teachers and walking rapidly to my history class to steal a front row seat. It's a mission honestly, I have to grip my text book against my chest really tightly and squeeze through everyone in the crowded hallway. The school hallways are always extremely over crowded that I fail to understand how teachers expect us to arrive on time for classes in one piece! Seriously, and today there just had to be an assembly which unfortunately made me arrive late to History and I had to sit in the back next to Mr.Hoodie.
It's funny how I still didn't know his name. For months I have not heard him participate or the teacher call out on him.
He was just there.
He would still walk the same direction as me after school, but we never tried to walk together. I would just awkwardly pull out my phone and speed walk past him.
As I took the vacant seat next to him, the same one from the first day of school, I avoided eye contact. It's just so awkward to say something to him when we haven't even acknowledged each other since that first day.
I stole a glance at him to only realize he was already looking at me.
Great.
What does he want from me now? Couldn't he just act like I was never there?
"Hey."
I looked at him surprised. "Hey?"
"Yeah, it's the modern way of greeting. " He smirked at me.
Oh no, this kid did not just try to get smart with me. He greets me as if we've been talking to each other throughout the whole year. He wasn't suppose to greet me, he was suppose to sit there and ignore me while I did the same. What does he want from me?
"Leave me alone." I responded, rolled my eyes and tried my hardest to tune him out.
I was excited for today's class because we were starting a new chapter on World War I. I always found the early 1900's interesting because so much happened in such little time, although some were horrific and tragic like the Holocaust and the Great Depression, there was the time of the flappers and most importantly women's suffrage! And it's fascinating how you can still find people that lived through this era, even as little children, and can tell their story.
"So how were the past months without me? I saw you had a penchant for stealing other peoples seats up front."
What is up with this kid?
"Look Mr. Hoodie kid, I'm not sure what you want from me, but I would really like it if you would stop bothering me." I seem to always have to whisper yell to this kid, because he finds it so convenient to start a conversation in the middle of class.
I narrowed my eyes at him, to see if he would dare say something back.
"Am I Mr. Hoodie now?" he chuckled.
I narrowed my eyes further and rose my chin up, not understanding what was so funny. "Well, since you have not introduced yourself, I took it upon myself to make it up."
"Ronnie. My name is Ronnie Anderson." He offered with a bright smile that did not compliment my bitter mood. He was just so nice and cute that it makes it hard for me to be mean to him. "And what I want from you is," he got closer and whispered something in my ear that I'd never expected, "a relationship."
"Oh no, no, no, no, no mister." I shook my head and stabbed him in the chest with my index finger with every no.
"But why not? What is so wrong with being in a friendly relationship with me?" He smirked again while taking a hold of my assaulting finger.
I looked at him incredulously. What made him think that I would date him when we barely even knew each other? I took a deep breath a recited what I've told every boy that has asked me out "Because, I'm a strong independent woman and I don't need no man!" I snatched my finger back and noticed he was grinning now.
Wait a second.
He said...
"Who said anything about dating?"
I blushed crimson red and my eyes widened bigger than I thought was humanly possible. I couldn't believe I insinuated that. Usually, that was what guys wanted from me, but now I was at lost for words.
He wanted to be friends.
Never in a million years would I have thought that I would have a guy-friend. Specially one whose name I learned a minute ago.
"You want to be friends?" I only had one person who I considered my friend, Gina. Should I let this kid in and be his friend? Well, he looks nice and decent. Didn't look like he had a criminal record either. Maybe he will be a good addition to my small friend group.
"Yeah, I think we'll be great friends actually." He agreed.
I studied him carefully to see if he was being genuine or not.
He was.
"Okay." I offered him my hand for a shake. "Friends."
"Friends." he replied, and we concluded it with a hand shake.
