He looked at Katie's door and his expression softened. "Oh shuck." Her dad ran his fingers through his hair and leaned against the wall. He sank down onto the ground, his face in his hands and his knees pulled up to his chest. "Katie," he whispered.
Pretending nothing happened, he walked to her room and opened the door. Katie was laying towards the wall, the blankets pulled over her head. Her breathing was light and steady. He breathed a quiet sigh of relief. John walked over to her and knelt down. He moved the hair out of her face and kissed her on the forehead. John walked out of the room, and closed the door behind him. As soon as the door was shut, Katie threw the covers off of her. She ran to her window and grabbed her flashlight. She messaged Adeline, her best friend who lived next door.

Katie turned off her flashlight, feeling a little bit better. She got into bed, dreading tomorrow, when Addy and Katie would have to face Teresa, the teacher's pet, the "Princess of Life", the bully. She messaged Addy almost every day. They were the odd girls at school. The ones who practiced their Morse Code during recess, the ones who wore jeans and a t-shirt every day and didn't care, the ones who were good kids, but didn't admit it. They were the easy targets for Teresa.
