2 years later

Right after cheer practice I saw Antons text.

He said to meet him at the soccer field in twenty minutes and that he had something he wanted to tell me.

I walk out onto the field and look around. I can't see him anywhere so I walk towards the stands and sit down on a seat. A was a bit early so him not being here is not a schocker. I'm always early and he's always late.

Suddenly I see him emerge from the bushes ahead behind the other stands. He's fidgeting with his fingers nervously and on his arm rests a basket. I wonder what's in it.

When he sees me he smiles warmly and some of his nervousnes dissapears. He reaches the stand I'm sitting on and sits down beside me.

"Hey Alanna. Thank you for coming." He says and looks down at his hands that's busy tangling and untangling eachother.

"Hello. Why so nervous, it's just me." I say and take his right hand in mine. We've known eachother for about two years and I thought we were comfortable with eachother. But now I don't know if that's how Anton feels it.

"Of course it's just you. But that's kind of the problem." He says sadly.

"Okay but then I'll leave just be happy. Please." I start getting up. He's still holding onto my hand and he drags me down again beside him.

"I'm sorry that's not what I meant. Please don't go. I've got something I gotta tell you. Remember. And that was not it." He says this time looking me directly in the eyes. I turn away and now it's my turn to look down at my hands.

"Then what is it?" I ask my hands unsure.

"Look at me. I want you to look at me when I tell you this." I turn my body towards him and look at his chest. Anyplace but his eyes. "I know you don't like looking people in the eyes so I guess that's close enough." He squeeze my hand reassuringly. Takes a deep breath.

"I guess here goes nothing." He says under his breath. "I like you Alanna. Like really really like you. Like as more than friends. I know that you May not feel the same way but I really needed to at least tell you so that I regret nothing later" He says fast so that I barely make out what he's saying. I look down again.

We sit in silence for a while.

"Please say something. If you want to think it thru then that's okay. I can wait. Just say something so that I know that you are okay." He searches for my gaze but I don't look at him. "I even brought a basket with food and a blanket so that we can have a picnic while you think about it and so that we can see how it feels." He pats the basket lightly and smiles. I smile back. Who can say no to food?
