Valeria's P.O.V.

As a kid I was never one to disobey my parents. I always did as I was told without putting up an argument. Never once did I complain or question decisions my parents made in regards of my wellbeing. But then again my parents never gave me a reason to question them. My parents have always been loving and caring parents. And given the fact that I was their only child and a girl for that matter—allowed me to always get whatever I wanted—materialistic wise that is.

I happen to be the daughter of two very wealthy and important people. My father is a very prestigious business man who owns half of the companies in the country. He is one of the most powerful men in the world—every country worldwide wants to make business with him.

"Hey there, nerd." Esteban took a seat next to me on the bench. "What ya reading?" He slightly bended his head over to look at the cover of the book I was holding in my hands.

My father was currently working on a project with the Balderas family—the family Esteban was a part of. And as a result my father's business relationship with Mr. Balderas soon turned into a very close friendship between both families. And unfortunately for me, Mr. Balderas had a son who was only two years older than me, which obligated me to spend some time with him. So every time our parents were to hang out—so would him and I. Eventually Esteban and I also formed a friendship that soon involved me developing a small crush on him.

Esteban was your topical popular boy. Everyone in our neighborhood knew who he was and every girl drooled over him. He was a very attractive seventeen-year-old boy and maybe that's why I had a crush on him. But being the shy fifteen-year-old girl I was—I could never have the bravery to tell him. So I just watched him date hundreds of girls, while I was just the girl who kept him company when our parents would hangout.

Although Esteban and I would hang out with our parents, we always annoyed the crap out of each other. We didn't alway agree on the same things and we both hated to be wrong. We were so different—like fire and rain. But yet there was something that pulled me towards him.

"Hi Esteban." I greeted him annoyingly as I closed my book to bring my eyes up to him. "Is your father with mine?" I asked him.

"No." His facial expression changed into a monotone one as he scratched the back of his neck.

"What's wrong?" My voice changing from an annoyed one to a concern one.

"I—I um.. I came to bid my farewells." He said still scratching the back of his neck.

"Farewells? I don't understand?" I said confused.

"I leave for college tomorrow morning. My parents want me to attend a school in Europe. So I wanted to say goodbye before I left tomorrow." He said turning to look at the ground, avoiding total eye contact with me.

"W—what?" I tried to hide any sadness that could make him see right through me.

"I know you and I drive each other crazy sometimes. And I know that we are only friends because our parents are friends, but I really am thankful for the company you have kept me when our parents got caught up in their business." He said finally making eye contact with me and threw me his famous smile.

I smiled at the photo my father had sitting in his office of the Balderas family with us. I remember taking this photo three years ago on Esteban's last day before he left to Europe. Never did Esteban and I see each other after that day.

"How's my little angle doing?" My father's voice rang behind me as his shoulders laid on the door frame of his office.

"Father, I'm eighteen now. You can't keep calling me little." I giggled as I made my way over to him and embraced him in a warm hug.

"You'll alway be my little angle." He whispered softly but something inside me told me that his words had a more significant meaning.

"Is something wrong, father?" I asked concerned.

"You know that your mother and I love you, right? And we would never do anything that wasn't in your best interest." He said pulling apart from our hug.

"What's going on, father?" I asked with worry.

"You are the most important thing to your mother and I. We would do anything to protect you from the dirty people out there in the world. You have a family name to look after. If you were to ever be in hands of a horrible person, we wouldn't be able to live with ourselves." There was a bliss of sadness in his eyes as if what he was about to tell me would bring sadness to us. "Lucas's boy is to be back from Europe in two days. He has a degree in business and comes from a good family." He said trying to enlighten the subject.

"What are y—you trying to say?" I asked suddenly afraid as to what could be his answer.

"Lucas Balderas has asked for your hand in marriage for his son and your mother and I have agreed." He said sighing as if it was a huge weight off his back to finally tell me.

"Marriage?!" I protested. "But father I do not wish to be marry to—"

"Valeria, please trust us. Please. We would never agreed if we didn't think it was the right thing to do. Please trust us, sweetheart." He said quickly bring me in for a hug. "You're my only daughter and I want the best for you. Say you'll do it. At least for me, please?"
