I walked into school that day. The first day of school. I didn't know where I was going, but that's why my mom was with me. I was holding her hand and we were walking down a big hallway. Walking down the hallway, I got even more nervous because I thought I would get lost. My mom stopped in front of a door. At the time, I didn't know this, but I felt my heart sink to the ground. There was an older woman in the doorway, the woman I would soon know to be my teacher, Ms. Jordan. She smiled a big, bright, and kind smile. She welcomed us in. I remember getting even more nervous when I found everyone was staring at me. Everyone but this one boy who was playing with blocks. I did see him look up at me a few times though. He had dark brown hair and bangs. Ms. Jordan and my mom talked for what seemed like forever. After a while Ms. Jordan called Blake over. The boy that was playing with the blocks looked up at Ms. Jordan, got up, and walked over.

"Megan, this is Blake Tanner. Blake, this is Megan Bridges," Ms. Jordan said. "Blake, will you show Megan around?"

Blake simply nodded and looked at me. I looked up at my mom who was looking down at me smiling. She bent down and hugged me. I remember all of the oxygen escaping my lungs when she hugged me. When she let go, all the air came back to me and I could finally breathe again.

If I do remember correctly, which I probably don't, my mom said to me, "You be good now, okay?" I just nodded even though I didn't want her to leave. She turned me around to face the boy named Blake. "Follow him, okay?" Again, I nodded and took off torwards Blake.

Blake and I were quiet. I was shy but I didn't know if he was. I didn't say anything. At the time, I didn't know what awkward meant, but now that I do, I know that it was awkward for the two of us. Blake finally turned around smiling.

"So, are you excited?" he questioned me.

"No," was my response.

"Oh, come on, it will be fun!" he said jumping up and down.

"Sure," my answers were short amd blunt.

"Okay, so, these are the cubbies. You put stuff in here," Blake said pointing at the cubbies. Now that I think back on it, Blake always seemed a lot more mature than the others did.

"Okay," I answered. He pulled me with him this time and pulled me over to a bunch of kids.

"This is Cassie," he pointed to someone with blonde hair playing with a stuffed bear, "this is David," he pointed to a boy with brown hair playing with cars. He pointed out some other kids and was about to point out more, but Ms. Jordan interrupted him.

"Well, now, children, I know, you want to have more fun, but this is kindergarten and we have to learn something! Let's all get into a circle on the rug I'm standing on now and we'll start by learning each others' names," Ms. Jordan said. Everyone started gathering to the rug. Blake pulled me with him. "Okay, who would like to go first? Say your name then something you like." Blake excitedly raised his hand. Ms. Jordan looked at him, "ah, yes, go ahead."

"I'm Blake! And I like..." he thought for a moment,"...making new friends!"

"Yes, good! Now, choose someone else to go!" Ms. Jordan answered.

Blake automatically looked at me and I knew where this was going. My eyes got wide.

"I choose you!" Blake said pointing at me.

"Uh, I'm Megan, and I like, uh, my mom?" I questioned.

"Okay, good, now choose someone else." I pointed to someone, they said their name and what they liked and they did the same.

When we were done with that 'game' we got to do centers. Blake pulled me over to the blocks with him.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"As of today you are my new best friend!" Blake said happily.

I was sitting at my desk like usual not caring about anyone or anything. I'm usually picked on so whenever someone talks to me, I ignore them. I didn't care when Mr. Whitley stated that there was going to be a new student today. So, when the new student walked in, I didn't look at them. I just kept looking out the window like a normal day. I didn't hear when Mr. Whitley kept calling my name. I was too lost in thought.

"Ms. Bridges," it was a little blurred, but the voice was calling my last name, and the only person who does that is Mr. Whitley. "Ms. Bridges," the voice was more stern this next time. "You are going to show our new student here, Mr. Tanner, around the school and get him to his classes." I simply nodded not wanting to talk. "Mr. Tanner, go sit next Ms. Bridges."

The new student the desk next to me and sat down. The name 'Tanner' rung in my head. I've heard that name somewhere. Then again, that last name is common. Mr. Whitley finished calling attendence just before the bell rang. I got my stuff and started walking torwards the door when someone tapped on my shoulder. I turned around looking at them. It was the new kid.

"Aren't you aupposed to show me around?" he asked me.

"Go find someone else, I'm pretty sure any other girl would be extremely happy to do so," I say rather bluntly.

"No can do. Mr. Whitley said for you to, so you must."

I rolled my eyes. "Look, if you are seen with me, you're going to be picked on yourself. And seeing as you're new, that will be worse. I don't want anyone else going through what I'm going through."

"Look, that won't happen. I perfectly capable of protecting myself. And others as well." He gazed into my brown eyes intently.

"Yeah, well, I don't want to risk it." I turned and walked away.

The hallways were emptying faster. Everyone was quickly going to their classes not wanting to be late. Soon, I was the last one in the hallway. Not caring about my education I didn't care. But then, I heard another pair of feet following me. I turned my head to look behind me. It was the new student. I stopped in my tracks and turned my whole body to face him.

"I'm not going to get rid of you, am I?" I questioned. I was obviously annoyed and didn't make an effort to hide it.

"Nope. Now, can you show me to my class?" He asked smiling.

I sighed. "Give me your schedule," I said as he passed me his schedule as I snatched it from him. I quickley scanned through it and caught a glimpse of his name. 'Blake.' It kept ringing in my ears. I knew him. I should've known from his last name. I looked up at him. "Blake?" All my anger fused up inside of me.

"Yes?" he answered. I couldn't hold it back anymore. I was too furious at him. I slapped his cheek. He looked at me stunned. Tears formed in my eyes as I ran away dropping his schedule.
