Seth doesn't realize what he's doing, and it's so subtle that Kai doesn't eve catch it. It starts with them sleeping together, sure there's only one bed in the bungalow, but it's so casual and innocent that Kai pays no attention to it. Next, is Seth making the weekly trips into town to get food. Things that Kai can't grow, like milk, eggs, cheese, and meats. He doesn't know why he even bothers buying meats, he can hunt for rabbits and game in his wolf form. But Kai put her foot down the first time he showed up with a dead rabbit. He still won though because Kai made really good soup with the meat and (begrudgingly) thanked him numerous times.
Neither of them realize that Seth is courting Kai, and that Kai is allowing Seth to court her. It feels normal and natural to Seth but it's so subtle that Kai doesn't think anything of it. Seth has been super helpful but he's also her familiar, so the entire courtship goes over their heads.
"Hey Kai? There's a crow outside the window with an envelope in it's beak. Should I let it in?" Seth stares out the window at the bird hopping around on the ledge.
"Yes, let it in and give him a slice of bread as payment." Kai calls back. What the hell? Seth thinks, payment? He does what she says though, he opens the window and watches as the crow hops inside. It drops the envelope on the floor, and waits patiently while it stares at Seth. He goes into the kitchen and takes a slice of bread from the loaf. The crow is still on the windowsill where it was before Seth left. He hold out the slice of bread near the bird, unsure of what to do. The crow leans forward, snatches the bread out of Seth's hand and leaps out the window. Seth watches it fly away feeling more bewildered than when he first woke up on the table almost a month ago.
He picks up the envelope from the floor and shuts the window. The envelope is has nothing on it except him and Kai's name. He walks into the bedroom where Kai is sitting on the bed looking through an old spell book. He hands her the envelope, and waits for her to open it.
"Kai and Seth, thank you for all your help with getting the Void out of Stiles. We don't know what we would have done without your help. If you are ever in the area or need help with anything, our pack is in your debt. Thanks again, Scott McCall. And then there is a picture here too, of the pack." Kai flips the picture over and holds it up for Seth to see. There's a large group of teenagers accompanied by a handful of adults all smiling.
"We did it!" Seth yells, Kai cheers with him because yeah it's pretty awesome it worked.
Kai leaps up and crushed Seth into a hug, "we did it." She whispers, she sent the spell a couple of days ago and got a call from Deaton late that night saying that the hawk arrived with the spell. Seth hugs her back, resting his face into the crook of her neck. He breathes in and is hit with Kai's smell. She pulls away and looks up at him. "Whaddya say about some celebration cake?" She's still beaming with joy.
"I think celebration cake sounds amazing." Seth smiles softly down at her. He's heart does a weird thing, seeing Kai look so happy and still loosely in his arms.
Making a cake sounded easier than it actually is. Seth gets everything they need from the higher shelves and in return gets to lick the spoon and bowl. Seth asks Kai to make cake everyday because the batter is really good. Seth moves from where he's leaning against the counter to put the spoon and bowl into the sink. He turns around, and walks over to wear Kai is sitting on the counter. She smiles up at him, carding her fingers through his hair. He wraps his arms around her and rests his forehead on her shoulder.
He loves her, he really does. It snuck up on him, quickly and silently. Sure, he's known for awhile that he liked Kai, he cares for her deeply. He wouldn't have left the pack and became her familiar if he didn't. But today he's realized he doesn't feel quite the same as he did a couple of weeks ago when he told the pack he was staying. He knows Kai now, not that he didn't before. But now he knows the little things, the small things. He knows that Kai prefers breakfast over any other type of meal, her guilty pleasure is trashy reality television, and that she thinks coffee creamer is an abomination. He also knows for a fact that Kai has an emergency stash of chocolate bars that she'll eat when she's on her period. But then again, Leah had a similar stash so Seth thinks it's probably just a girl thing.
Kai is still carding her fingers through his hair, and Seth is happy. He's so happy he's here. He eventually lifts his head from Kai's shoulder because he's afraid he'll fall asleep on Kai. He smiles down at her again, not wanting to move away. Kai rolls her eyes and pulls Seth down by his shirt. She presses her lips softly onto Seth's. Seth freezes in surprise, but starts kissing her back once the shock wears off. It's a slow kiss, not demanding at all, it's soft. Kai's fingers play with Seth's hair on the nape of his neck, and Seth rests his hands down in Kai's hips. Seth slides his tongue lightly against Kai's, he can hear Kai's heart pounding faster than normal and he's glad he's not the only one.
They pull away to the timer going off, signaling their cake is done baking. Seth moves to take it out of the oven, and places it on the stove to cool. He settles back in between Kai's legs, pulling her into another kiss.
