The Call

I was waiting for my bus home from work when my phone buzzed in my back pocket. It was almost 10:30, who would call me at this time? As I pulled it out, I saw an unknown number on the screen. I hesitantly answered the phone and was caught off guard from what I heard. "Hello...hello. Are you there Makayla?!" Someone said. They sounded very scared. I sat on the bus stop bench, thinking someone from work was messing with me.

Before I could reply they said, "Please help me..." I could hear them crying faintly in the background. "No! Get away! Scream!" Kathrine...it was her. The voice sounded so familiar. She has been missing for 3 days. "I've got to tell the police." I thought to myself as I ran as fast as possible towards the police station. It was about 4 blocks from the bus stop I was at.

It was a late Friday evening, traffic was horrible. I saw the light turn red as I ran towards the crosswalk. I was half way across when a big bus honked its horn as loud as it could. My life flashed before my eyes. My gaze locked on the bright white lights that were getting brighter and closer. I wasn't ready to die, but I was about to.

That's when something, rather someone, pulled me out of they way as the bus came to an abrupt stop. "Are you okay?" A man said, his English accent was so pure and breathtaking. "Excuse me ma'am? Are you okay?" He said again, this time he sounded rather concerned. "Oh, I am now. Are you okay. I mean, you look okay. I meant you look beautiful. I'm going to stop talking now." I said, making the biggest embarrassment of my life. I wished I did get hit by that bus now.

He smiled after what I said. He looked so beautiful when he smiled, almost like he was an angel from heaven. "Okay, do you need a ride somewhere, you looked like you were in a hurry?"

"Umm, sure. If it's okay with you, I need a ride to the police station." I said, still slightly embarrassed.

He walked me to his car. It was an old looking car, but it was better looking than most of the cars people have around here. Once he helped me in, got in, and pulled out he asked me, "So, would you mind telling me why you need to go to the police station?" It took me a minute to process what he said. I was completely focused on the way his lips moved when he talked.

"Oh, umm...I don't really know. I mean, yeah, I know. I just don't want to talk about it." I was starting to fall asleep, it was 11 at night and I had worked my ass off today. A few minutes later, the guy shook me and made me jump. At first I didn't know where I was until he told me we were at the police department.

"Do you need me to wait out here to give you a ride home?" He asked before I got out. "No, I don't want to keep your out late." I said, "I'm sure I can call someone." He quickly wrote down his number on a small piece of paper and handed it to me. "Take this, incase you need a ride. Okay?" I nodded my head before rushing into the building.
